Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR)

Responsible for leading Novartis' global technology organization for its research and early development division (NIBR). Managed an annual budget of ~$260M and a team of ~450 employees accountable for informatics, data science, data management, application development, engineering, infrastructure, information security, and IT operations. Successfully turned around an organization struggling with lack of strategic direction and high employee turnover, regaining the confidence and trust of its team members, customers, and stakeholders. Created a new strategy, reorganized the team to be more product-, user- and data-centric, addressed long-standing security gaps, introduced new high-value capabilities, and provided seamless operational stability and support to NIBR’s ~6,000 users during the Covid-19 pandemic. Within 2 years, reduced voluntary turnover by more than 10 percentage points (from the highest to one of the lowest at NIBR), and improved employee engagement scores by up to 14 percentage points, outpacing the rest of Novartis on every category. Served as a member of NIBR’s senior leadership and Novartis’ digital leadership teams.

Responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, operation, and support of information technology services, and for establishing an encompassing informatics vision to infuse innovation and strategic differentiation into Covance's product offerings. Recruited a new team, developed a ground-breaking technology platform, created the first software-as-a-service offering in the company’s history, and signed landmark agreements with several major pharmaceutical companies to provide strategic oversight of their entire global portfolio of clinical trials. The platform, known as Xcellerate, integrates, analyzes and visualizes clinical trial data in near real time to mitigate risk, protect patient safety, and drive better and faster clinical trial results. Served as a member of Covance’s Global Operating Committee and the Covance Science Council. Recognized with Computerworld’s 2017 Premier 100 Technology Leaders award, the 2018 Scrip award, the 2016 Fierce innovation award, the 2016 Informa clinical and research excellence award, and the 2015 Covance leadership award, the company’s highest recognition for people, process, and client excellence. Responsible for providing informatics solutions and data analysis services to pharmaceutical R&D. Led a diverse team of programmers, data architects and system integrators delivering high-performance data management systems, applications, and analytical frameworks to enable data-driven decision making, simplify operational workflows, and improve knowledge management and collaboration. Examples include: 1) a medical review platform to monitor the execution of clinical trials and the performance of clinical sites and investigators; 2) a healthcare analytics platform to provide fast and intuitive access to massive electronic health databases to support outcomes and translational research; 3) a system for tracking adverse event volume and compliance metrics for medical safety; 4) a recipe warehouse to understand the impact of process variables on product quality in pharmaceutical manufacturing; 5) an integrated clinical database and tailored analytics to model disease progression and identify novel biomarkers for Alzheimer’s and other neuropsychiatric disorders; and 6) an e-health platform to improve the design of clinical trials and coordination of care for patients with autism spectrum disorder. Led a parallel team of bioinformatics analysts supporting ongoing therapeutic programs. Managed global cross-functional informatics portfolio and presented informatics capabilities to J&J’s executive leadership and external scientific advisors.

Responsible for all information management systems for research and early development worldwide, and for setting global information technology strategy and architecture for pharmaceutical R&D. Oversaw the design, development, deployment and support of numerous highly praised enterprise-wide information management systems, including discovery data warehouses, electronic lab notebooks, compound and sample management systems, high-throughput/high-content screening platforms, and advanced data mining, analysis and visualization tools for discovery, clinical, and translational research. Led the development and deployment of a major new global regulatory information management system aimed at harmonizing electronic submissions to the health authorities around the world. Stewarded several transformational organizational initiatives as a member of both the R&D IT and Research Capabilities senior leadership teams. Managed a team of >100 employees and contractors.
