When you look at this tree what do you see?

A strong, beautiful, graceful, magnificent, resilient, unique tree thriving where it’s planted?

OR

Do you see a strong, beautiful, graceful, magnificent, resilient, unique tree unhappy because it’s unable to move?

As I was admiring the beauty of this magnificent Century Palm*, photographed at the Hope Botanical Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica, and sent to me by a friend, the phrase “bloom where you are planted” came to mind.
 
It’s about perspective! 

Some people are happy where they are in their jobs and careers and are thriving - blooming where they are planted.

Others feel like they're stagnating, their talents unnoticed and their potential untapped. They become disheartened by a lack of recognition or advancement opportunities. This is a reality in the world of work.

I have had too many conversations with people who are stifling in their jobs and careers. Some are seeking to change; others are not in the position to do so immediately. 

This post is for those in the latter category, who would love to move but cannot at this time. 

👁️Take another look at the tree again: 

Do you see yourself like this tree, blooming despite the adversity surrounding you?

If not, are there ways for you to channel your energy into personal and professional growth? This could include seeking out new learning opportunities, taking on challenging projects, or building relationships with colleagues and mentors who can offer support and guidance.

Just as the beauty of the Century Palm emerges gradually over time, so too can your career progression, being on a journey of incremental growth and development. 

When you embrace a “bloom where you are planted," mentality, it provides an opportunity to add to your talents, showcase your value within your current role, and position yourself for success. 

Your situation might not be perfect, but despite challenging circumstances you can thrive right where you are.

Am I suggesting that you remain in an unbearable job situation? Of course not. 

Unlike a tree that’s stuck in one place forever, you can move! Like the Century Palm, you are endowed with so much. If you are fed up with where you are, start looking for an organization that will appreciate you and your talents, and where you can bloom brilliantly.

*The Century Palm generally blooms once in a hundred years, hence its name.
