At the InnovationLab, I led research and innovation projects and programs for the Orthodontic Business Unit with an Open Innovation approach managing relationships and activities with 20+ partners (start-ups, corporations, and academic partners).

Contributed to the Global R&D strategy of the Orthodontic Business Unit by leading cross-functional workshops to refine the understanding of customers' problems and generate and assess new product and business ideas.

Managed a cross-functional material development program (antimicrobial coating for a medical device), encompassing technical assessment, regulatory requirements, clinical study, intellectual property, manufacturing, and business model.

Research and Innovation Manager

In addition to previous tasks, I promoted Straumann's innovation culture within Orthodontic Business Unit by organizing cross-functional brainstorming sessions and using various tools for product and business model innovation.

Managed research and innovation projects and relationships with partners, both in industry and academia.

Screened and assessed new materials and technologies for the next generation of dental devices, with a special focus on clear orthodontic aligners.

Senior Materials Research Engineer

Planned and managed materials innovation projects (photo polymers for additive manufacturing) with external partners (industry and academia): specifications development, technology scouting, material and product testing (safety, effectiveness).

Contributed to the successful registration of a Class II(a) medical device in the US (510k) and the EU (CE mark), by leading Verification and Validation testing (definition of design inputs, development of test methods, definition of test protocol and statistical methods, coordination of product and material testing, and authoring regulatory documentation).

Contributed to the marketing strategy of the business unit, commissioning targeted research to academic partners resulting in five peer-reviewed publications that are used for marketing material and medical brochures (project plan and management, relationship management, monitoring of the results, publication draft and review).

Orchestrated and concluded the purchase of laboratory equipment ($300k): assessment of needs, definition of requirements, benchmark of solutions, budget acquisition.

Subject Matter Expert for polymeric materials informing various processes (Marketing, Clinical Research, Regulatory Affairs, Intellectual Property, Business Development).

Saved $1M by leveraging technical expertise to guarantee the safety of stock material used for a medical device, thus preventing a massive waste.

Materials Research Engineer

Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne

Led a research project sponsored by a major chemical company (Solvay) on thermoplastic polymer composite manufacturing, resulting in a final dissertation (200 pages), 3 peer-reviewed publications, and a patent application, and presented the results at 4 international conferences and to the industry partner.

Planned and conducted laboratory testing and analysis of polymers and composites to investigate process-structure-property linkages and define the ideal process window of a novel manufacturing process, including glass-fiber textile permeability/wetting and compaction, polymer rheology and physicochemical properties, polymer composite microstructure and morphology, and mechanical properties.

Carried out techno-economic analysis demonstrating the feasibility and viability of a novel manufacturing process that reduced processing time of 75%.

Mentored 8 master students; led laboratory classes to undergraduate students (rheology and permeability testing); trained users in the use of equipment (rheology); teaching assistant activities.
