Donaldson Timber Systems

Following the sale of SMTS to Donaldson Group, I continue my work as Process Analyst under our new name of Donaldson Timber Systems.

Reporting to the Finance Director, I work across the business to identify improvements, assist the Senior Management Team to prioritise change projects and work with colleagues & partners to implement improvements and mitigate pain points.

Recent focus has been managing the transition from system implementation to business-as-usual following the successful implementation of IFS as the replacement to our business-wide ERP system.

Identified improvements on the new robotic production line that brought immediate 20% productivity gains and proposed further improvements for longer term increases to output.

Previous Activities

After leading the down-selection process to select IFS, worked as Solution Architect to establish the initial prototype before partnering with an IFS-experienced Project Manager to complete the implementation project.

Concluded work on the AIMCH project (https://www.aimch.co.uk/) with a presentation at Futurebuild2022 summarising the Advanced Manufacturing & Digital Transformation workstreams.

Process Analyst

Operating as an internal consultant, I worked across functions and management levels on multiple improvement projects, involving both physical operations within our production facilities and system processes within our business-wide ERP system, Axapta.

Significant Projects

Managed two workstreams within the 3-year, £4m research project, AIMCH, a multi-partner collaboration looking at industrialisation of the UK housing sector:

1. Advanced Manufacturing – developed simulation tools to improve predictability of future factories and created specifications for the application of robotics in timber frame factories. This resulted in a planning proposal for a new SMTS factory in Scotland and a multi-million-pound investment to replace major production lines in the Oxfordshire factory.

2. Digital Transformation – capture business requirements in relation to MMC and housebuilding to explore the ERP market place. This work resulted in the implementation of a new business-wide ERP system for SMTS.

Led the team of Improvement Champions & Internal Auditors to ensure compliance and improvement of business processes in line with ISO9001, ISO14001, BOPAS, BBA, STA Assure certifications.

Headed up the Manufacturing workstream for the Single Skin Party Wall product development project. Liaised with academics, funders and suppliers to integrate acoustic, thermal, technical and production requirements while also assessing commercial viability to prepare for launch to market.

Switched a product to a new work centre, increasing production by 80%, through the application of lean manufacturing techniques.

Implemented a 5S programme that saw output and efficiency increase by 5-10% as well as qualitative improvements such as increased engagement from operatives and safer working environment.

Remapped customer complaint process, implementing a Microsoft SharePoint portal to replace paper forms. Reduced the number of complaints by 30% and resulting costs by 55% in the first year.

Responsible for the end-to-end delivery of timber frame construction projects, I led a cross functional team to ensure sites were delivered to customer expectations, programme and to budget.

Clients included major national house builders and smaller local developers building housing and flatted developments as well as schools and student accommodation, ranging from simple housing projects to multiphase mixed-use developments.

Managing multiple simultaneous projects with a combined value over £5 million; key tasks included reviewing contract documents and handling variations, monitoring progress against programmes and budgets, negotiating Final Accounts and leading continuous improvement initiatives.

Developed new processes and reports to improve efficiency of the Commercial department including a Project Dashboard to quickly review a project’s financial status and a process to ensure effective billing and cash collection.

Project Manager

Working in a team of 3, supported the Microsoft Axapta ERP system with more than 160 users across five Divisions.  Responsibilities included modification specification & testing, error diagnosis and end user training.

Liaising between users and external partners, I helped to develop and refine the ERP system processes and supporting systems.

Worked with Divisional Directors to specify and develop management information reports helping them to analyse business performance and assisted in identifying areas of the business processes requiring refinement.

Business System Analyst

Produced technical drawings using AutoCAD and Consultec software for Production and Site operations.  Resolved follow up queries and customer feedback reports.  Identified improvements and developed procedures in order to increase productivity of the Design Office.

Selected to join the team implementing the company’s first ERP system, initially responsible for writing and delivering system training to 50 designers across two Design Offices.  Subsequently invited to take over as Team Lead for the Design function, worked with other function leads to suggest alternative solutions and improvements to the system prior to successful implementations in two Divisions.

Developed corporate website representing UK, US, Germany and Japan Divisions.  Increased new leads through strengthening links to offline marketing campaigns.
