Danae King covers religion and immigration at The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio, where she has dug deep into the scandal of priest sexual abuse of minors in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus as well as several other faith and immigration topics. King reports on the large refugee population in Columbus, access to services for local immigrants, how faith communities serve the larger community and more. She has won several awards for her work at The Dispatch and is passionate about holding powerful people and institutions accountable, telling people's stories and helping start conversations that lead to solutions. Columbus Storytellers Project

I am the local lead for The Columbus Storytellers Project, part of the national Storytellers Project, and I lead a team of coaches and coordinate live storytelling events featuring five speakers. Through this, I have planned, organized and hosted a live event with more than 250 attendees. I chose and coached the talent, promoted the event and coordinated a rehearsal before it took place.

Danae King covered education, both K-12 and higher education institutions, at a daily newspaper in Northwest Ohio. Her coverage included several higher education institutions and multiple school districts. She went to education board meetings, covered breaking news and developed in-depth articles on different education-related topics and trends.

Danae King covered business and health as well as other topics as needed at the Northwest Ohio daily newspaper. While working as the business reporter, she filled a daily section with news and also wrote enterprise stories weekly for the Sunday paper. She came up with two series to run on the Business Page and wrote features, trend stories, enterprise and breaking news.

Danae King was the first Mary J. Corey investigative reporting intern, named for the Sun's first female editor, and worked on in-depth pieces. One of her investigative stories examined the reporting processes for rape survivors at 12 area universities. She also covered daily business news, paid family leave and crime and courts stories.

The BG News

I supervised a staff of reporters and editors to constantly upload content on to bgnews.com and publish three print editions a week, while also frequently writing and designing.

I worked at The BG News from my first day on campus as a freshman to the day I graduated, so when I became Editor-in-Chief my senior year, I knew there were things I wanted to change about The BG News.

When I came on in the fall, I instated a beat system, created an investigative reporting team and upped our social media and web presence.

During my year as editor-in-chief, the paper had content on the web or in print daily and writes an investigative story a week. We had more than 4,000 followers on Twitter and tweeted several times a day.

During my time at The BG News, I learned how to upload content to the web using a content management system, take photos with a DSLR, take and edit video using Final Cut and iMovie, design and lay out pages and more. I was also able to sharpen my writing, reporting and editing skills.

My experience at The BG News was invaluable and I have already used several of the skills I learned during college to enhance the professional newsrooms I have worked in thus far. My first passion is reporting and writing, but I also enjoy editing, designing, uploading content and managing social media and I'm willing to do anything to help every news team I'm a part of with anything I can.

Editor-in-Chief

I started working at The BG News the first day of my freshman year at Bowling Green State University. While working there, I have written many articles and had many positions. My experience at The BG News has been the most valuable learning experience I have had in journalism. I've been able to get hands on experience in reporting, editing and designing and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I covered the Board of Trustees and campus news, managed interns, wrote the list of story ideas and supervised the production of one print edition a week for the newspaper at Bowling Green State University, a school with approximately 20,000 students.

As Editor-in-Chief I managed the staff, wrote the list of story ideas weekly, managed the weekly shop night, covered the university Board of Trustees and reported frequently. I also supervised the uploading of web content onto the web and the managing of the paper's social media presence.

I worked as a freelance reporter and picked up articles when I could for the weekly newspaper that serves Tipp City and West Milton, Ohio.

Reporter

As an editorial intern on the Metro Desk, I covered breaking news, frequently wrote articles and came up with story ideas. I worked as a paid, full-time reporter for the summer and reported on health, science, state news and more.
My best experience at the Dispatch was covering a murder-suicide in Jackson, Ohio. I made the drive from the Dispatch to Jackson and covered the story on the scene. It was great experience talking to the police and trying to track down the names of the two young boys who were involved in the shooting. Covering the story made me more confident in my ability to report breaking news, as I was the first reporter to confirm the names of the two victims and the Dispatch printed them before any other news source and before the police released them.

For three months, I worked solely as a freelance reporter and took several stories for The Troy Daily News. Once I went back to school, I continued to take as many stories as I could. Being a freelance reporter has helped me explore reporting on different topics and covering meetings.
