Netatalk is an open source implementation of AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) that enable file sharing between Macintosh and Apple II clients.

- Introduced GitHub CI/CD workflows with static analysis through SonarCloud, which led to frequent detection of bugs before they were merged into the main branch
- Completed the migration from SourceForge to GitHub, which increased engagement and code contributions by the open source community.
- Fixed bugs in C code, ported CVE security patches, resolved numerous user reported issues.
- Did code review of contributed PRs, planned, tagged and promoted releases.

Open Source Developer

PiSCSI Project

PiSCSI is an open source SCSI interface emulation, implemented as a hat for the Raspberry Pi.

Maintainer and lead developer of the Web Frontend application implemented in Python and Flask.

- Implemented a protobuf client in Python to interact with the piscsi process, which removed hardcoding and fragile parsing of stdout of the backend service
- Internationalized the webapp with gettext and pybabel, which led to localization into 5 languages
- Improved code quality, removing tech debt and adding features.
- Managed the SDLC, coordinated and reviewed code of other contributors, planned releases.

The Recruiting Automation business area develops and operates the indeed.com job seeker journey from the apply through to the interview. This included orchestration, scheduling, assessments, and hiring events.

Managed a Quality Engineering organization of 35 people, who were embedded with teams in an engineering organization consisting of ~150 Software Development Engineers, Engineering Managers, PM, UX.

Quality Engineering strategy:
Enabled the R&D organization to scale with shift-left testing and high levels of test automation, achieving a 400% engineering productivity improvement over 3 years.
Rolled out a strategy of Code with Quality driven by static analysis and multi-layer integration testing. Achieved 90%+ Push on Green delivery, while maintaining product quality.
Transformed the Software QA function from a traditional gatekeeping structure to a fully embedded shift-left testing function, where testing and automation is a shared responsibility in the cross-functional team, with QA operating as testing and automation SMEs.

Software delivery management:
Led Automation Development team to deliver innovative Java / JaCoCo testing tooling and infrastructure. Increased speed and fidelity of test automation for dozens of teams and 100+ products.
Mentored engineers in agile development and software engineering best practices, guiding them to be productive and self-managed.
Infused the organization with a “local innovation, global adoption” culture where Engineers were empowered to solve problems in an innovative way, and then spread adoption across the organization.

Accelerated the careers of engineers:
Grew a technical testing function from 10 to 30 engineers and 5 coaches, over 2 years. Fostered a culture of transparency, inclusion, belonging, and accountability. 
Accelerated the careers of 20+ people through mentorship, coaching, promotions.

The Advertising business area owns indeed.com’s core ad revenue flow, the backend and big data components that manage ad click pipeline and bid optimization for sponsored job ads. (Kafka, SQL, Java, Python)

Quality Engineering lead for Advertising. Managed a team of 10 QA Engineers and QA Automation Engineers, which supported a Software Engineering organization of 40+ Software Development Engineers.

Instituted test automation strategy and infrastructure:
Introduced testing strategy and automation coding standards and code review process, which increased engagement and made automation code co-owned with Developers, rather than siloed in QA.
Set up a permanent test automation infrastructure in a data center and defined golden test data. Led to 5x improved test coverage of all business critical components, and reliability of the CI/CD pipeline.

Coaching and technical mentorship:
Mentored tech skills of direct reports and arranged opportunities which enabled them to take on technical testing and automation coding tasks. Promoted several staff into Automation and Development roles.

Site wide leadership for the QA function:
Functional leader for all 60+ QA staff at the Tokyo site, organized meetups and team building events. Led to accelerated adoption of test automation best practices and frameworks.
Served as hiring manager for QA Engineering roles at the Tokyo and Singapore sites. Organized interview panels, overseeing the hiring funnel, training others in interviewing. Made a large number of strategic hires over 3 years, which grew both sites combined from 20 up to about 100 staff.

Freeciv is a free and open source empire building strategy game.
As a Maintainer, owned release management, resolving user-reported bugs, improvement of game data and rules, and community moderation.

Rakuten

Coached a team of 5 QA Engineers who worked on internal technical testing projects.

Evaluated and rolled out a standardized test case management system (TestRail) for the entire company which led to adoption of ~50 teams and 1000s of reusable test cases, and resulting in cost savings.

Evaluated and rolled out a cloud testing solution (Xamarin Test Cloud) for the entire company that enabled high-fidelity cloud mobile device testing, and organized company wide training sessions to drive adoption.

Created an on-site smartphone device test lab with remote control functionality that enabled low-cost 24/7 test execution on real devices.

Initiated and completed the decommission of an expensive and ineffective proprietary testing tool, transitioning all teams to Webdriver and Appium. Saved the company ~$120k+ yearly in license fees.

Supervised offshore software testing teams in China and Romania, establishing coding standards and conducting code reviews to assure quality of test automation code.

Implemented a test framework for an administrative webapp in Ruby and RSpec, fully automating testing.
