I’m the editor of LinkedIn, overseeing a team focused on building the voice of the professional world through news, ideas, and community. I also produce a weekly podcast and video series with top leaders about the lessons they’ve learned, called This Is Working (subscribe at lnkd.in/tiw). The 200-person Editorial team spans the globe — from São Paulo to Singapore — creating high-quality economic/business/workplace content; cultivating the voices of professionals; curating the best of LinkedIn; and circulating those conversations and headlines to the right people at the right times. I started my career in business journalism to explain how companies and entrepreneurs worked. At LinkedIn, I realized that I could tell those stories and spread knowledge at scale by helping professionals explain how they think and what they know, often prompted by what was going on in the world. It’s through that global knowledge exchange — the back-and-forth of one idea building on another — that we all get smarter, faster about what we do or want to do. My background is as a writer and editor. At Wired, I covered the birth of Android, the early days of the electric car industry (my cover story on Shai Agassi’s Better Place was a Loeb Awards finalist), and my piece on what happens when SEO gets weaponized — a 2009 story on Demand Media — was included in Yale Press' Best Technology Writing 2010. Before joining Wired, I was a founding writer at Condé Nast Portfolio. I was also a Fortune boomerang, writing for the publication in the 2000s and returning after my time at Conde Nast to re-build and run Fortune.com. Some of my favorite stories from my Fortune days include secretly embedding at America’s top employer, The Container Store; a rare joint interview with Warren Buffett and Bill Gates; a profile of the founder of BitTorrent (selected for Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology); and a story in which I followed the creators of Skype as they were building their company (named Best Story on Entrepreneurship at the Business Journalist of the Year Awards). A piece looking at Pat Robertson’s business empire earned me a letter from the religious broadcaster letting me that I was bound for hell (but he'd help save me, if I was interested). A graduate of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, I started my career at the Triangle Business Journal in Raleigh, NC. and now live in Brooklyn with my wife and 3 sons. Business Insider once dubbed me the “most powerful business journalist on the Internet,” which I'm counting on to be the lede of my obituary.
