I am also a co-founder of Rivly, a platform that connects US-based businesses with online shoppers who value quality, connections, and rewards. Rivly is a result of my passion for entrepreneurship and customer-centric innovation, which I  fostered as the founder of Comfortably Collared, a men's clothing brand that offers high-quality, reasonably priced, slim-fit clothing.

I've been going to market research industry events for over 15 years.  The evolution of my mindset over that time makes me laugh. 

In my first year, every other agency was a threat - the enemy! 
Every prospective client was a target and the goal was to hit them with the hard pitch every chance I got (I'm so sorry!).  

Now, industry events are where I see many of my favorite colleagues, most of whom no longer work at the same company as me. Many are client-side and some are brave enough to have stayed on the agency side - all are friends. I learn so much in the small talk about life, business, careers, and the state of market research today. So much more than I ever learned that first year while frantically scribbling notes in the short presentations. 

No enemies and no pitching!

Dan Lake

At my best, I have a childlike curiosity for more things than I have time to explore. My sons inspire me daily to pursue this nagging curiosity. Miles asks me a million questions, Aidan challenges me, and Liam disappears to explore the next bug, person, or fire hydrant.  

One of the best things that happens in my day-to-day life is hearing someone gush about a new "expert" they're learning a ton from, and finding out I've never heard of that person. I'm similarly excited when I get to do the same for others.  

LinkedIn, the business network, is now loaded with health and wellness experts. I imagine this is due to the perception that many executives on LinkedIn are rich and will pay for health programs, as they've traded health for money much of their career (at times, I did). I've picked up lots of tips and tricks over the last few years. 

Please share some gold with me, who doesn't want to feel better everyday? Here are a few of the things I'm focusing on now: 

- Walking after meals - it helps with digestion and walking may be the most underrated wellness activity. 
- .8-1g of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. Crazy right?!? If you're active and trying to build or maintain muscle, this will become the only macro you likely need to track. If I'm eating 180 grams of protein, I'm not really hungry for anything else. Yes, it's possible, my liver and kidneys are working great (just tested), and I feel amazing when I do this. 
- 3, 2, 1: No food 3 hours before bed, limited fluids 2 hours before bed, no screens 1 hour before bed. I often fail with the last one, but the other two lead to much better sleep, just make sure to hydrate early in the day.  
- Building muscle is the most underrated fat burning strategy out there. The women in my life undervalue muscle-building - they focus more on cardio, or think they're building muscle when they're actually doing cardio. A pound of muscle burns 3-4x more calories than a pound of fat at rest. It's simple, add muscle and burn more calories while you sleep. 
- Zone 2 cardio for heart health. Research this and build it into your routine - I find stair climbing, hill climbing, and rucking to be best. 
- Intermittent fasting for general health, not for weight loss. I've barely been sick since I started this 3+ years ago. It gives my body a break from digestion. Takes some getting used to and isn't for everyone, but it's been a game-changer for me.

For some reason, coaching basketball feels surprisingly similar to delivering a big presentation. I get all sorts of nervous excitement, but my outward persona needs to be one of calm enthusiasm. Particularly with 4th grade boys – their emotions are off the charts, they need to look at me and see someone who is enjoying the excitement, but totally under control. After all, panic is contagious! 

In a 12-game season, we went to overtime 3 times, and won at least 5 games by less than 3 points. Virtually every game filled me with so much anxiety I had a hard time falling asleep that night – in reality, I’ve NEVER had a presentation that made me feel that way. 

We eventually lost a tough playoff game (by 3 points) and the kids were crushed. I had to totally reverse course and hide the fact that I was gushing with happiness and pride. These kids worked so hard and absolutely overperformed compared with how they started the season, but I couldn’t walk over with an ear-to-ear smile while they all wiped away tears. I found some middle ground and looked each kid deep in the eyes to tell them how proud I was of them – mostly I saw looks of genuine surprise, maybe one or two “F you, coach Dan” looks, and the start of the quick bounce-back kids get after this stuff happens. 

I’ll say it again, every business leader should coach kids’ sports. I’ll have that moment again with a team at work, or with a junior colleague who just lost a big deal and I doubt it will be any harder than delivering the pep talk to the 10-year-old boy whose soul was temporarily crushed after losing a basketball game.

I owe a big debt, and it's unlikely anyone will ever come to collect.  

In 2008 during election season, I was as obnoxious as it gets. Very strong opinions, and worse yet, not always as informed as I could have been. 

It was so bad, my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) nearly left me. This wasn't the only damaged relationship - I was so close-minded in my beliefs I couldn't allow myself to respect any opposing viewpoints.

None of this is to say we shouldn't be passionate about the things we believe in, we absolutely should, only to remind myself that we have so much more that unites us than divides us, despite what we see in the news. 

I carry this painful lesson with me daily - my wife is also pretty good at reminding me - it encourages me to take an extra breath before a snap judgement, to listen a little harder, and seek to understand rather than to respond.

It also helps me to have patience with my two boys who think they couldn't be any more different from one another, but actually have all the best things in common, they just haven't come to appreciate that yet.  

This year, I hope we'll all take an extra breath and do our best to remember we have so much more to like each other for than to dislike.

I'd love to hear a thoughtful debate on the potential TikTok ban. There are so many questions swirling in my head:

- If there is a ban, what are the implications for other companies with similar characteristics? 

- How many biased opinions have a loud voice on this issue? So many people are paid as "Creators" OR competition adjusting to TikTok's success - it's hard to know which opinions are genuine. 

- Who REALLY knows how much involvement the Chinese government has in the platform? How much are they "spying"? And how is that information is being used? 

- Does it matter that China (and other countries) have already banned large US-based social platforms? 

- Did TikTok forget to lobby with US politicians? It seems anything can be accomplished with enough lobbying $$$. 

- How do we measure the extent to which TikTok is (or isn't) bad for humanity? This is where I have the strongest opinion (which I'll suppress for now) - while I think it ends up being the least talked about piece in this debate, it's most important to me, as others like TikTok will inevitably take its place.
