Business Development Manager

Shark Software

Shark Software is an IT company that provides several services: from team augmentation service to building mobile software from scratch. Shark Software operates on the international market since 2016 and covers various development directions: web-/mobile development (front-end), back-end, Magento, Shopify, UI/UX. 

I joined the company in March 2021, where I was appointed to work as Business Development Manager. One of my main responsibilities was to find new clients in staff augmentation direction furthermore strengthen relations with existing ones. As part of this job, there was a need to work with/in a team. 
Primarily, I was in charge of managing the company's Upwork profile - upgrading and improving the whole process. As a reflection of the fast-growing pace of the company, the need of creating a Sales Department and establishing the right processes to work on an increasing number of clients from Upwork top management appointed me to first participate in building the processes, then asked to lead the entire Sales Department. 

By following high standards of work and pursuing higher results, Sales Department and I teamed up to reach a new target for the company - Close the deal for the first outsourcing project throughout the company’s history. 

🟦  My responsibilities included 🟧
▫ Analysis and establishment of  processes in the Sales Department;
▫ Managing Sales Team;
▫ Accounting of the company’s main clients and partners;
▫ Participation in the creation of marketing materials (presentation, website, case studies);
▫ Managing of company’s Upwork profile;
▫ Processing of team extension requests from the partnership network;
▫ Working with NDAs and Agreements;
▫ Preparing invoices, keeping track of the status of the payments;
▫ Accounting of the projects.

Factorial Complexity

Factorial Complexity is a small family venture focused on inward perfection as opposed to aggressive expansion; it has less than 30 employees. This company mainly focused on mobile development especially on creating custom software development solutions. Starting their journey in 2012, the company developed and delivered a variety of projects by providing services in Mobile native languages, Back-end, UI/UX.

As the company is not so big, all developers work as a team, and this enthusiasm and readiness for new challenges are also supported by the company.

I stepped on the Sales Team’s ship in March 2020, and first what company pointed out that: “I had the freedom to reach out to any clients even with complex and non-trivial projects.” To become a valuable employee and to show immense willingness to reach higher results, I need to go through the Lead Generation stage on the UpWork platform, where I had an opportunity to learn and become more proficient in the IT Sales field/platform specifics day-by-day. After several months, I was promoted to the Sales Manager, where the area of my responsibilities increased and I started to be in charge of the Sales full-cycle processes.

▫ Writing bids on Upwork;
▫ Pre-sales activities;
▫ Creating of proposals for clients;
▫ Preparing of Agreements and NDAs;
▫ Research and analysis of new sales channels.

Sales Representative

I am Daria. Business Development Manager. Welcome to my page. 
I would like to introduce myself, but not in a typical way. I am Daria, a human, with an interest in searching existential principles: that’s who I am.

This interest prompted me to start my journey in IT as an IT Student in University where after graduation I could be a developer, but I decided to take another path and become to Lead Generator - Learning basics of sales, Writing Cold-Letters, Creating new tactics to increase leads' efficiency lead me after a several of months to become Business Development Manager. 

Working with people externally (clients) and internally (developers, managers, all employees) pushed me to pursue this way and make me love what I am doing, and help every day wake up as motivated as I can be. Challenging negotiations, contracts, and projects, do not make me scared or frustrated but enhance me to work harder, learn more and discover new ways of solving general and particular problems. 
My Motto is “Make good teams Great from my position by being PRO: Proactive, Responsible, Organized”. By using this motto in everyday work life I can say that as a people-oriented person, I put myself in the developer's shoes in every aspect of my work, during searching or speaking with clients, during the first steps(onboarding process) in the projects, to find win-win position for both sides: company and client. 

Meeting new challenges, searching for new options in enhancing myself as a professional, deep preparation to provide top-notch service made me the person I am now.

Every day and every hour I am in search of new challenges and new experiences. If you want to have a business partner, who would be interested in growing your projects by providing services that are needed for your project now, then you address it to the right person.

Many companies strictly separate their engagement and technical teams in terms of knowledge. 

But, is this a good strategy? 
I don't think so. 

⚪ What happens if your engagement team doesn't know the technical details of your service?
Lost sales happen in the majority of such cases. Why? Lack of technical knowledge can unnecessarily prolong negotiations regarding a service. A specialist without technical knowledge may need to constantly address their tech team to succeed. When sales teams fail to answer technical questions, customers may lose interest in your service. 

⚪ So, should an engagement team know the technical details of their services?
Without a doubt, yes!

⚪ What benefits can such knowledge bring about?
Above all, it's much easier to obtain customer buy-in in case they have specific requirements for a service. Some people look for particular technical details rather than features per se, and that's where technical knowledge is essential. You can greatly reduce negotiation phases, too, as technical knowledge mitigates the need for additional investigation of your service. Lastly, there's also a personal component: what customer would want to buy a service from a team that doesn’t understand how it works?

⚪ Are there any downsides to this knowledge?
Like with any knowledge. In certain situations, ignorance may be better. Sometimes, excessive information can end up in lost sales if you're not careful enough. For instance, you may claim that some feature is impossible in your solution even though the tech team can disagree. The best way to avoid this problem is to upgrade the fundamental skill of any engagement professional by sync ups with the tech experts and continuous learning of new solutions on the market.
