You’re doing yourself a huge disservice.

Imagine those in a room. Filled. Every seat taken!!!

Imagine asking each of them to write down 1–2 names.

1-2 people that could be introductions, referrals and/or opportunities.

You walk away from that event with LEADS!

Do you know them? No. Will they respond? Not all of them.

However, a few will. Dozens if not hundreds will.

This is a good place to start. This is moving the needle.

This is traction!

Whether you have 20,000 connections, 10k, Heck, even 500!!!

We all have access. We all have options. Even if it is small, it is a start.

Some people are happy with their jobs. 

I get it! That’s ok 👍 

However, when a recruiter reaches out

An opportunity has been created…

Pause. 

This market is saturated with talent.

Instead of ignoring or, worse, replying with frustration, 

Remember that someone else’s life could change from receiving a similar message.

Do you have an obligation to help the community? No.

Should you? Yes. 

Next time you get that message about an opportunity, take 30 seconds.

Think of someone who might be interested or need a chance!

If you can't think of someone, build a bridge with that recruiter.

You never know when you might want to walk across it.

Getting a job is hard and yet we see "new job announcements" all the time.

Let me share a few reasons why I think "some" find "faster" success.

I have noticed they network. They ask for help. Early and often.

They're laser focused and apply for jobs where the JD describes THEM!

They're flexible and consider pivots, lateral moves, and industry changes.

Where possible they're open to relocating, being in the office etc.

I have noticed they seek out strong reccomendations from former peers.

I've witnessed them invest in their interview skills and not just their resume.

They post, engage, and interact with their industry, network and community!

They praise publicly, vent privately and continue even in adversity.

I have the utmost respect for job seekers. This market is tough. 

I hope these little nuggets of thought help someone this week.

Helping someone find a job incredible. 

The feeling is something else.  

It can take a variety of forms:
An introduction to a recruiter

An introduction to a friend. 
Feedback on a resume. 

A listening ear, or a peice of advice. 
Running them through a mock interview. 

Reminding them of their value and worth. 
Being a reference if you are a former peer 

+ A variety of other things….

You don’t need to be in hiring. 
You don’t need to be an influencer to act.

You can help within your community. 
Your circle of influence. Your tribe. 

You would be suprised, at the amount jobs and opportunities you touch. 

Trust.

I don’t know what I dislike more….

1. Dialogue around “beating the ATS” 🤖 

2. People selling job seeking services based on or fuelled by fear. 🔍 💵 

3. Posts preaching to NOT wear the green banner during your search. 🟢 

4. Posts asking me if I agree. 👍 

5. Pineapple on pizza. 🍍 

Genuinely torn….

If you're  worried about your green banner. Don't be!

If you're  worried about being 15 minutes early, 5 minutes early, or on time for an interview, Don't be! 

If you are worried about not having enough endorsed skills on your LinkedIn profile, Don't be!

If you are worried about your location holding you back in the US. Don't be!

As a recruiter, this is how I feel:

1. If your resume is relevant, I will happily read through all of it!

2. If I see the green banner and you fit the need, I WILL reach out!

3. I am not clock-watching. Be punctual; this is all that matters. 

4. I do not go to the bottom of your LinkedIn page and count up the skills you have endorsed. 

5. All my roles are onsite in aerospace; we put planes into the sky. If you are talented, I will discuss relocation with you. 

Job Seeking is freaking hard work. It is a full time job with a lot more stress, worry and juggling thrown into it. Hope this list eases your mind just a little.

Jobseekers... Have an interview coming up?

Find yourself breathing heavy as Zoom/ Google Meet loads?

Lump in your throat? Butterflies in your stomach?

Breathe... It's normal.

It actually means you care. And THAT is everything!

It’s okay to break the ice with the hiring manager / recruiter.

That person is a human with likes, interests, passions and purpose.

I promise you, the meeting will go better if you connect with them!

Take a look at their background, their LinkedIn profile. 

Bring 1-2 talking points where you see common ground.

If you can't, bring a compliment. Make sure it is relevant.

Be kind. Be warm. Listen to understand. 

Play by the 60 second rule. Tailor your responses to around a minute.

This will help you avoid tangents and rambling!

Remember, you already passed the eyeball check. 

Your resume opened the door.

This upcoming interview is just two humans talking.

Imposter syndrome is a very real problem with today's talent.

It causes so many super qualified candidates to withdraw.

To withdraw out of fear of not being "𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥" enough for the company.

As a recruiter, I see it more than you think. It makes me sad.

A couple of months ago, I interviewed a candidate

He withdrew because he did not believe in himself.

I found him to be really impressive, with great experience and a strong skillset and education.

He never met with the hiring team. Our conversation was the first and last.

He called me and expressed his insecurities.

"𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥."

"𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴."

My jaw hit the floor. This candidate was amazing!

I tried to get them to the table to have talks with the hiring manager.

But it didn't happen. 

From my perspective, he should have had more confidence in himself.

He should have given himself more credit.

Jobseekers, give yourself more credit. 

Believe in your background, your skills, and your experience.

Feelings of doubt are normal, but take the leap.

Have courage. Growth will follow.

Jobseekers, you can be rejected this week and land a great job.

Jobseekers, you can be rejected this month and create a fantastic career.

Rejection is part of the process. 

You rarely get asked about your degree/education years into your career,

The same applies to this part of your journey. 

A few years down the road...

The hiring manager is going to ask about your experience doing X and Y.

He/she is not going to ask how many applications you submitted. 

They won't ask how many rejections you received. 

They will focus on what you produced, experienced, and ultimately...

What you learn't. 

Rejection, whether it is for a day or season teaches us.

Keep your chin up. 

Your future managers, peers and mentors do not see you as a reject.

You don't need to either. 

You've got this! 

It's okay to be down; is it okay to be out?

Your condition is temporary. 

Only you can make it permanent.

“I’m out!” is what I often hear.

Out means you gave up; you lost hope.

It is okay to be down,

But you don’t have to be out.

Keep moving forward, folks! 

This market, like a pendulum, will swing. 

Your luck will also swing back.

I believe they ultimately want: 

Appropriate compensation! 
Competitive benefits!
Upward mobility! 
Opportunity to create lasting impact!
Supportive leadership!

Just my perspective and 2 cents.

Long-term relationships are 🔑  

I have hired candidates after months of staying in touch.

One who comes to mind was 7 months later!! 

He was a solid fit for a role that opened up. 

If you get the chance to talk with a recruiter or hiring manager, 

Remember that hundreds of other candidates didn’t get that opportunity. 

You have an opportunity here.
