Real life quote from an underwriter “The only way you won’t make an ass out of you and me is if you dig in and find out what is wrong with the program.”

We had just been talking about an account that had some complicating factors. 

They drove some of their vehicles in more than a 500 mile radius.
Some of them never left the lot.

Figuring out the appropriate rate for the auto insurance was very difficult, and I didn’t want to potentially stick a bad line of coverage with them. I had indicated I would keep the auto elsewhere to protect them.

When I talked it through, the underwriter much preferred to add some additional pricing and keep the auto insurance along with the auto and umbrella.

It’s better for everyone – myself, the company, and the customer.

And when I thanked him for talking me through it, he reassured me.

“Look, I know you were looking out for us. And I appreciate it. And you can take this quote for your blog – the only way you won’t make an ass out of you and me is I you dig in and find out what is wrong with the program. You did the right thing.”

When I first started in sales, I accepted every opportunity that I could find. The longer I do this job, the more I realize that it’s not my capacity to say “Yes” to projects that propels me forward, it’s my ability to say “No.”

The more success you have, the more opportunities you have.

People will ask for your services.

They will ask for your time.

They will ask for your advice.

Before you have success, nobody wants any of those things from you. And it feels amazing on the ego to be flooded with these requests.

Until you realize that accepting all these requests will take away from your core mission.

Stay focused.

Know your ideal prospect. Politely decline opportunities that fall outside your ideal size, your ideal marketplace, and the way you want to engage in a sales process.

Know your most important tasks. Make sure you don’t accept less important responsibilities that will take away from the time you need to do them.

Execute the most important things every day. 

And decline everything else.

If you just had a claim, that’s generally the wrong time to ask for higher coverage limits.

For example, if you’ve got a fleet of vehicles, and one of your heavy vehicles rear ended someone and caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage, it probably doesn’t make sense to call the underwriter a week later and ask for more coverage.

The underwriter’s counter in that situation is most likely to sound like this:
“I’m glad they’re concerned, but I’ve got serious questions about their driver selection practices how they monitor behavior on the road. I might need to reduce coverage or non-renew the account at renewal.”

The underwriter will be fearful.

Instead, the first step needs to be to look inward.

What were the practices that need to be changed to prevent future accidents?

Could there be more focus on driver selection or training? Vehicle maintenance?

Once the business practice is rectified, then you approach underwriting.

“We had this serious event. It made us reconsider our business practices and we made these changes. We also better understand the risk we have would like to increase our insurance limits.”

Your results will be much better.

Every business owner is within their rights to ask for total transparency from their broker. The insurance transaction should not feel like a black box. Here are things you can and should ask about:

When is the last time you took my account to market?

Who did you approach and how did they respond?

Has anything changed in my business since the last time you approached the marketplace?

Has anything changed in the marketplace that would cause it to make sense to approach them again?

Is there anything I need to change to get better consideration from those companies?

How often do you recommend we approach the marketplace to make sure we’re continuously getting the best deal?

You should not have to “take your broker’s word for it.” They should be able to show you all these things and explain them. 

This is the information that will help you feel like you are taking control of your renewals.

 Getting the client to move fast enough to make a deal happen is hard enough… and then you have to keep the underwriter on schedule too.

In this short video, I walk you through a real scenario:

 A home health agency came to me with a $35,000 renewal and only a few weeks to fix it. Most brokers panic in that situation.

Here’s what I did instead:

✅ Narrowed the carrier list based on revenue + service mix
 ✅ Identified the one underwriter who actually had appetite
 ✅ Picked up the phone and made a clear, compelling pitch

I’ve struggled for a long time on how to balance two conflicting thoughts in my brain – “Be content with what you have.” And “Never be satisfied, always strive for more.

I know if I’m going to come to a place of rest in life, I must be content with what is in front of me. This is the idea of rest that I read about in the Bible.

But if I’m going to accomplish greater things, I need to be constantly looking forward. This is the common thread of entrepreneurship.

I heard Todd Graves of Raising Canes articulate a middle path very eloquently.

“Always raise the bar.”

I think with this mindset, you can appreciate all the things you have accomplished in the past. There are joy and excitement in those memories.

But looking forward, we want to achieve more. The expectations are higher.

We have to raise the bar.
