There’s a reason companies are afraid to talk about men’s mental health

“Education should aim at destroying free will so that, after pupils have left school, they shall be incapable, throughout the rest of their lives, of thinking or acting otherwise than as their schoolmasters would have wished.”

This is a direct quote by Johann Gottlieb Fichte, one of the key contributors to the founding of the Prussian Education System—the same system on which the American Public Education System is entirely based. 

If Johann were alive today, and I could speak to him face-to-face, I'd say this:

Mr. Fichte, 

Your very system of thought and education was created to destroy the spirit and selfhood of the sovereign human individual. You wished to create obedient, uncritical, and philosophically impotent human beings. 

While you may have succeeded in destroying the lives of many by brainwashing them to trust their instructors over the voice within, you have failed miserably to take out all of us. 

Believe me when I say – that you do not want to poke the sleeping beast of the individuals you've failed to indoctrinate. Not only do we have full access to our deepest, innermost selves – not only have we read and contemplated far beyond the bounds of your instructors – but now we're able to bond together more efficiently and freely than ever before. 

Unlike your violent systems of propaganda and oppression, those of us who are awake are not violent or harmful to others – we have found ways to live well together outside the bounds of the divisive illusions you have propagated. 

You have wished all human individuals to be divided against themselves for your benefit and gain. 

Well, good sir – karma is massive, you know what.

Society’s man box: a comfortable prison, but isn’t freedom more enticing?

I used to drink my face off, trying to silence the critical voice in my head, telling me I was worthless, no good, and a failure.

Then, I discovered Jungian Psychology, and realized that there was a hell of a lot more to me than I was ever aware of.

I slowly began to realize, as I dove head first into the depths of my being, that the critical voice in my head was not my own, but the cumulative voice of a lifetime of societal messaging that turned me against myself.

Don’t you see? That’s how capitalism thrives - when its citizenry despise themselves. They’ll buy things they don’t need, and get sick because of the drastic internal division.

It’s all an illusive game, and there’s nothing the tyrants wish more than for you to hate your own guts.

There’s a way out of this - a way to come to a self-acceptance so deep, you can never be manipulated again.

You can start living - freely, without abandon.

That particular view in the rear-view mirror was like nothing I’d ever quite seen - or perhaps I’d just forgotten.

My six year old son’s “eyes lit up and he proudly sang the song with such beauty, such sweetness, and innocence – it broke my heart and renewed me simultaneously. There we were, in a somewhat ugly strip mall parking lot on a cloudy Tuesday evening, and I felt like I witnessed an eternity of spirit in those few minutes. As the song almost ended, J looked to me and said, “daddy are you crying?” “Yes buddy I – that was just awesome,” I said. “You have to tell mommy I made you cry when we get home,” he proclaimed. I smiled and we began to drive.”

It’s ok to stop pretending now. You can stop hiding.

If you really watch many men, closely, you’ll see how they are hiding - hiding from themselves, their families, their children, their best friends.

D.W. Winnicott, a famous British psychoanalyst, once said: “It’s a joy to be hidden, and a disaster not to be found.”

My question to all of you is this: what is this man you know hiding? How does he want to be found?

Anybody else having one of those days?

Questioning everything?

Wondering how we’ve gotten so far away from our direct connection to each other, to the animals, to nature? 

When our grandparents named us for the gifts we were bringing to the village. 

Pondering why so many of us are running around like crazy people, doing things, buying things, all because we can’t stand the silence of just being face to face with our loved ones or ourselves? 

If we could quiet down enough, for long enough, and just listened to what we actually have to say, or what we truly feel - what would come?

On Friday night, the sunset turned the sky a vibrant pink, and my sons and I went to stare at it for a few moments. The beauty and simplicity of nature.

What the hell have we done?

What have we gotten ourselves into?

Some days it feels like an s.o.s call - to see if anyone else out there feels me - and grieves all of it alongside me. 

I’m listening.

Grown Men and Play:

One of the most beautiful things in the world to me is seeing a bunch of grown men come together and be playful.

This past weekend, many dads from our local youth baseball league came together to clean up the fields for Spring.

Pulling weeds, tilling soil, shaping dirt - and having a sense of humor about it. 

What if each man could find a place to do these things symbolically with one another - to dig into their personal stories - and uncover what needs to be uncovered?

Men really just want to play - and play is essential for the soul of men to return.

Feel grateful in the past year to have met new friends like Jindy Mann, and Ed Brenegar - and some others who care deeply about these masculine issues of our time, and are doing things about it.

Real Men Write Poetry. 

I remember in 2009, my junior year of college at Franklin & Marshall College, I had no choice but to enroll in a poetry class. I hated it - and after three classes I begged and was successful in getting out of it. 

What an unbelievable mistake. 

Fifteen years later, I would love nothing more than to be able to chisel my poetic voice. 

Why do I admire male poets so much? Men like Jim Harrison (pictured above), William Stafford, Robert Bly, and others? Because they had the courage to explore their masculine selves in fierce contrast to the limited masculine values of their times. When most men conformed to wearing suits, they wore denim jackets. When most men were scared to speak language outside of rational shop talk, these men spoke from the wild within them. While most men focused on house projects, these men got out to the woods and found themselves in the face of the unknown. 

To be blunt, I also love women poets – but male poets hit a special place in my heart.

Most people rather watch television than engage their own imagination.

It’s not a critique. It’s an observation.

I find it fascinating that we’ve been conditioned to be soothed by mass made images projected toward our eyeballs and be fearful of the images that course through us.

Have you ever wondered why this is? 

Because capitalism thrives off of making you yearn for external means to soothe the internal void.

We are taught to trust the news but that our own nighttime movies - our dreams - mean nothing whatsoever.

Inner emptiness necessitates external purchases - a never ending cycle of keeping life just seemingly out of reach. 

I call BS. 

I’ll prove it to you.

A lot of people on LinkedIn talk about selling a “positive future.” Negative present, to positive future.

This morning I sat with the question: what do I really want more than anything in the future?

• A year long road trip across America with my wife and two boys 

• A cabin in the middle of nowhere where we can just “be” together 

• To take my sons on a vision quest of their own when they’re early adolescents 

• For my boys to know that I love them more than anything and wish to spend as much time with them as possible

Anything that gets in the way of this will have to go.

Grounding With Beauty Exercise:

Large crowded and loud spaces can be incredibly overwhelming for me. 

So, a few weeks ago I was driving and a question slipped through my psychic stream into my conscious awareness: 

“What can I do to ground myself in crowded spaces?”

I became witness to the answer, as if this conversation were happening with some wise elders within me.

“Find something beautiful in the space, and that’s your entry point to ground yourself.”

Beauty could be found in a smile between strangers, the laugh of a child, or the way natural light paints the space.”

This morning the sunlight was dancing on my office wall, and it filled me.

Meaningful Work

There was so much blood, I didn't know what to do. 

D A I L Y

            D R O P.

A few weeks ago, I had a terrifying dream that my oldest son was bleeding profusely. The trouble was, he didn't look injured at all - he was fine. Others in the dream told me it was his blood, and they proclaimed that it was my responsibility to deal with it. So they kept handing me more and more jars of blood. 

The very next morning, in waking life, my oldest son (one from the dream) was participating in a children's event - and came running out proclaiming he didn't want to continue. He was upset. A teacher came out and calmly spoke to him. She asked him, "What color are you seeing?" 

"RED! RED! RED!" - my son proclaimed. I didn't know what to do.

After a few minutes, he went back into the event - totally fine.

Being a fierce student of dream language, I realized in the following minutes that my dream from the night previous was warning me of this real event. 

P.S. Carl Jung has mentioned numerous times that the color red is associated with "feeling" in the dream language.
