My experiences and insights have informed my work, driving me to push for reforms that prioritise rehabilitation, fairness, and a more holistic approach to addressing crime and its underlying causes. 1. Prison Reform: I strongly believe in the need for prison reform to address issues such as overcrowding, violence, and the lack of opportunities. I advocate for a shift towards a rehabilitative approach that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of offending and equipping people in prison with the skills and support they need to successfully reintegrate into society upon release. 2. Sentencing Reform: I highlight the need for a more proportionate and individualised approach to sentencing. I argue for alternatives to short-term prison sentences, such as community-based interventions and restorative justice programs, that can better address the root causes of offending and reduce reoffending rates. 3. Mental Health Support: Recognising the high prevalence of mental health issues among individuals involved in the criminal justice system, I campaign for improved mental health support and access to appropriate treatment for people in prison. I believe that early identification, intervention, and ongoing support can help prevent individuals from entering a cycle of offending. 4. Education and Skills Training: I have emphasised the importance of education and skills training for people in prison to improve their chances of successful reintegration into society. And I call for increased funding and resources to provide comprehensive educational programs and vocational training within prisons, giving individuals the opportunity to gain qualifications and develop employable skills. 5. Collateral Consequences: I have highlighted the significant impact of collateral consequences, such as travel restrictions, employment barriers, and limited housing options, that individuals with criminal records face even after serving their sentence. I campaign for reforms that reduce these barriers and promote fairer treatment for individuals with criminal records, enabling them to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society. 6. Youth Justice Reform: I also campaign for reforms within the youth justice system, emphasising the need for early intervention, diversionary programs, and tailored support for young people involved in offending. By investing in the well-being and development of young people we can help prevent them from becoming trapped in the criminal justice system later in life.
