Every year, tonnes of perfectly good produce are discarded simply because they’re misshapen, bruised, or don’t fit supermarket standards.

In Costa Rica, Mariola Urgellés is giving this fruit a second life. With her social enterprise, Sunspectra, she transforms “imperfect” papayas into reef-safe sunscreen — reducing waste, boosting farmer incomes, and protecting marine life.

In 2023 alone, Sunspectra reused 1.6 tonnes of papaya that would have gone to waste, generating an additional $2,000 for local producers.

Transforming waste into wellness, Mariola is one of 15 winners of the Bayer Foundation Women Entrepreneurs Award 2025, delivered in collaboration with Impact Hub Network.
