In 12 years of coaching 3000+ startups and 40,000+ professionals, I have never had anybody 'burn' on stage.  

Today, I have 11 x 30 mins 1:1 coaching sessions, for Money20/20 Middle East. Here's my step by step process in each session, which I enjoy every single time. 

This is how you help people tell their story, to a world with no time to listen. 

🥅 Step 1: Quick intro, straight into: 'What's your goal at Money20/20? Investors; Customers; Partners; Press?' My goal is to make every minute count: the startup's Audience and Objective is established within the 1st minute. 

⏰ Step 2: Run through their draft pitch against the clock. In this case, it;s a 3-minute pitch: 450 words max, 25-27 sentences. 

✅ Step 3. What's going well? They need to know what to keep doing. My coaching style is, 'Build on the good stuff first, direct what can be improved' - not 'tell them what they are doing wrong so I can feel good.'

⏳Step 4. Are we on time? If yes: next step. If not: review which content could come out. A combination of focusing on their Audience and Objective, plus the Jury Criteria, helps us make good decisions about this. 

🌫️ Step 5. Anything unclear? How do we make things understandable: a comparison? A different way of telling? Quantifying the problem, and the result of their product? Shrink out details with a Power of Three? 

📋 Step 6. Structure: can we bring a traction statement early in the pitch? That tells the audience, 'This is not a concept, we are in business.' Is there a logical flow? Can The Power Of Three help focus a piece of the pitch? 

🎬 Step 7. Beginning: do we get them into the story quickly? Is the opening capturing attention? Can we use our personal story to connect with the audience/ 

🏁 Step 8. Closing. Is it planned? Is there a clear call to action, and a QR code to lead people to find out more? A booth number, so they can visit us? Do we say, 'Thank You!' to make sure the audience clap together? 

🧠 Step 9. Anything else on your mind? Any parts of the pitch you are still concerned about? 

Finally, we wrap up. Most of all, I have empathy for the pitcher. This is hard stuff: confidence is fragile. I want them to go away and feel: 'Yes, I can do this! I know which steps to take next.'  

First session starts in 1 min: the picture is from yesterday's day of Hackathon workshop and 8x  1:1s. I'll round off the day with a one hour workshop for pitch finalists at BT Sourced.

Here’s a simple hack to answer the question we get all the time;
What do you do? 

What most people get wrong is: they answer the question with exactly what they are working on – in detail – for 2-3 minutes… 

This hack will make your answer a true platform for a valuable conversation. 

Simply change the question in YOUR mind to;
What do you SOLVE? 

If you answer the question with what you SOLVE – it changes everything. 

Here’s a great framework to convert the Do question to a Solve answer. 

I presented this earlier this year at an event with 300 sales people in the room. 
(Remember Hans and Arthur?) 
Tough audience – right? But they loved it. 

The framework is in 3 parts. Simply explained in the 2 minute video.

And this will work for anyone in business: not just sales people or startups. If you're pitching a change to the IT system, a new HR initiative, or the plan for an off-site event... 

Focus on what you propose to SOLVE, before what you propose to Do. 

You'll always have a 90%+ better chance of getting the people you're trying to convince - on board.
