David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSc, is a physician-scientist at the University of Pennsylvania and one of the youngest tenured professors ever at Penn Medicine. He is the national bestselling author of Chasing My Cure: A Doctor’s Race to Turn Hope Into Action, co-Founder of the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network, and co-Founder of Every Cure. 

Fajgenbaum discovered a treatment that saved his life during medical school (https://nyti.ms/2kzaTet) and has discovered 15 more repurposed treatments through his Center at Penn. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA. 

Fajgenbaum has published scientific papers in high-impact journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and the Lancet. One of the youngest ever awardees of multiple top NIH and FDA grants, Fajgenbaum has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2016 Atlas Award along with then Vice President Joe Biden and Forbes 30 Under 30 and profiled by The New York Times, Good Morning America, CNN, USA Today, and the Today Show, among others. He received his BS from Georgetown University, MSc from the University of Oxford, MD from the University of Pennsylvania, and MBA from the Wharton School. At Georgetown, he was a Division I Quarterback and co-founded the National Students of AMF Support Network. 

I am so honored to receive the John Scott Award, the nation’s oldest scientific award, which was established by Benjamin Franklin and previously awarded to innovators like Jonas Salk, Marie Curie, and Nikola Tesla.

This recognition reflects the incredible work of our teams at Every Cure, Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System, and Castleman Disease Collaborative Network, along with our amazing partners and supporters who have pushed this mission forward every step of the way.

It was a privilege to be recognized alongside this year’s other awardees, Dr. Bonnie Bassler and Dr. Robert (Bob) Prud'homme, whose groundbreaking work is transforming how we understand and fight deadly diseases.

Two old drugs might help stop breast cancer from coming back!

A new Nature Medicine study from Drs. Angela DeMichele MD, MSCE, FASCO and Lewis Chodosh at Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System found that everolimus and hydroxychloroquine—two medicines already approved for other conditions—can dramatically reduce the dormant tumor cells that often cause recurrence.

In this small clinical trial, the combination of both drugs led to an 87% drop in dormant tumor cells and 100% recurrence-free survival at three years for the treated patients.

This is a major step toward targeting cancer before it returns—and a powerful reminder that some of the most promising cures might already be sitting on pharmacy shelves.

David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSc, is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network (CDCN) and one of the youngest individuals to be appointed to the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. An NIH-funded physician-scientist, he has dedicated his life to discovering new treatments and cures for deadly disorders like idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD), which he was diagnosed with during medical school. After spending months hospitalized in critical condition, having his last rites read, and having four deadly relapses, he is now in his longest remission ever thanks to a treatment that he identified in the lab. He is in the top 1 percent youngest grant awardees of an NIH R01, one of the most competitive and sought-after grants in all of biomedical research. Fajgenbaum is also applying business-inspired solutions to drive forward iMCD research and working to turn this innovative model into a blueprint for accelerating rare disease research and drug repurposing.

David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSc saved his own life by repurposing an existing FDA-approved drug to treat his rare Castleman disease. Now, he's doing the same for others who have run out of options. Joseph Coates was diagnosed with POEMS syndrome and about to be put on hospice care when his partner, Tara, reached out to Dr. Fajgenbaum for help. 

Using AI technology, Dr. Fajgenbaum and his team were able to find a drug that helped Joseph get healthy enough to receive a lifesaving stem cell transplant.

In 1954, Jonas Salk made a radical choice: he refused to patent the polio vaccine.

When asked who owned the patent, he replied: “Well, the people. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”

That same year, he received the John Scott Award  the same award I was honored to receive last night.

Salk understood something profound: when lives are at stake, solutions shouldn’t be constrained by profit. They must be unlocked and shared.

As long as I’m breathing, I will fight to unlock as many cures as I possibly can.

The simple formula that saved my life.

It starts with hope. You hope that your child will get better. That your disease might respond to something. That a path forward exists.

That hope drives action. For me, it meant running experiments on my own blood, digging through old drugs, and doing everything I could to find a treatment.

Sometimes that action leads to impact — even if it’s small. A new insight. A patient helped. A drug that works.

And that impact gives you more hope.

That cycle — hope → action → impact — has changed my life. It’s what got me through Castleman disease. It’s what fuels Every Cure’s mission.

We don’t just hope that repurposed drugs will work. We act. We validate. And we make sure they reach the patients who need them most.

Because hope alone isn’t enough but hope that drives action can change everything.
