Public radio has been in the spotlight lately, with news organizations posting stories about top NPR and NPR affiliate stations' revenue shortfalls, declining listenership, and leftward bias in news reporting, even with Uri Berliner's provocative piece in the right-leaning Free Press containing several factual errors that could and should have been corrected. 

Yet local public radio, like what's heard every day on WICN Public Radio, still holds an intangible connection with its audience when the focus is on the audience *first.* 

"My name is Leone Dellolio and I am 91 years old," he continued. "I knew all the jazz guys in my day. I worked in Vegas for years. Nightclubs, hotels. You guys keep me connected to that music." 

"Thank you, sir," I said. "And I am very sorry for your loss. Your wife sounds like a wonderful lady." 

"David, she was the best. I miss her so much. Her birthday is April 25 and I'm hoping WICN will play 'Evergreens' again." 

"I will make sure that happens, Mr. Dellolio." 

"It would mean so much to me. And I've known Joe (WICN mid-day host) for years." 

"Well...how would you feel about coming on with Joe this spring? You could pick out a few songs to play--and we'd love to hear some of your Vegas stories if you're open to sharing them." 

"I'll think about it David, thank you. I'm 91, it's not so easy to get around." 

"Let me know how we can help, sir. It would be terrific radio." (NOTE: he sounded decades younger and very sharp.)

It isn't just the music radio plays. It's the local connections, the relationships listeners have with hosts on the air live, that live in the area, that are accessible. And it's about finding ways to bring the audience inside, making them feel recognized and honored. 

This call happened on Friday, and candidly, *I* feel honored to get to do stuff like this.

Let's see more companies adopt similar approaches. Demonstrating empathy toward your customers this way isn't just good marketing, it's good business. 

Sometimes you have to screw with the LinkedIn scammers a little. 

Funny how they all claim to be philanthropists and investors while working middle-management jobs at large companies too.
