Trilingual conference interpreter - Japanese (B), Spanish (A), and English (A) - with over 20 years of experience in Japan, the US and Latin America. Studied formally in all three regions, has a double BA degree in Japanese & Spanish Translation from BYU, and is a candidate to receive an MA in Conference Interpreting from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, CA (MIIS). Current certifications include JLPT L1 (Japanese Ministry of Education), ACTFL Superior Certificates in Japanese and Spanish, court interpreter certification by the Superior Courts of California, and Approved Japanese interpreter designation in several states in the USA. ------ A court interpreter since 2002, David made his foray into Japanese/English/Spanish interpreting in Japan in 2003, where he was a medical interpreter. After returning from Japan, he quickly started interpreting at legal and technical events. Since then, his experience has been evenly divided between working for Japanese companies operating in the US (Honda, Toyota, Roland Corporation, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, etc.) and multinational corporations working with Japanese partners (Teradata, Boeing, Siemens, Bombardier, Doordash, UTC, Ingersoll-Rand, Cisco, etc.) He has also had the honor to interpret on stage for Japanese celebrities visiting the US and Latin America, including film directors Makoto Shinkai, Takashi Miike, Takumi Saito, Hirokazu Kore-eda, composer Nobuo Uematsu, George Wads (the creator of Attack on Titan), and the directors of the Pokemon Franchise, to name a few. David started his own comprehensive language services company Trifecta Translations in 2016, while working as an in-house technical interpreter at Honda R&D. He is an ardent supporter of fair pay and work-life balance for T&I professionals through best practices, win-win negotiation & quoting strategies under the freelance work model. He is often a guest presenter on these topics. When not interpreting, David stays busy promoting language access by quality professionals in the press and on social media, most notably by co-founding the American Alliance of Professional Translators & Interpreters (AAPTI), a non-profit that advocates for language equity by promoting certification and professionalization of language professionals.
