Alright, so in my role at Insperity, I get to meet with 8 – 10 small to medium sized business owners per month.

It ends up at about 80 – 110 business owners per year.

And over the last couple of years, I have noticed a trend.

More and more owners are viewing “HR” as a driver for success, and not a cost center.

Turns out if you invest in your people, you get a return on that investment.

In productivity. 🔨

In buying in of what you are doing. 🤼

And especially with the new generation coming up into the workforce, more individuals have an entrepreneurial spirit.

And while they may have a side hustle or two, they’re likely to be attracted to working for a small company for either equity, or simply feeling that they are a bigger part of something cool and special.

And there is emotion involved. And the owner is invested in you and your development.

It’s my belief that the trend of investing in your people will continue to increase and that’s an exciting thing. 🙌🏻

One of the most important things that I’ve learned over the years is this.

You are not a machine.

You can’t be 100% every single day of the week.

You just need to show up.

Some days you’re going to be at 46%, 24%, 38%, 70%...

But if you have the RIGHT SYSTEM IN PLACE and the RIGHT REASONS TO SHOW UP, you’re going to check the box and find a win every single day.

Most days you won’t have the “motivation.” But that doesn’t matter.

In my role at Insperity and my side hustle with Level Up Social Club - Networking Events, I’ve found that the most successful small and medium-size business owners and entrepreneurs have a system in place and a reason for showing up.

And good companies OUTSOURCE the rest.

-HR
-Marketing
-Social Media
-Etc.

This allows them and their employees to be laser focused on their CORE produce or service and, maybe most importantly, allows them to attract and keep great talent.

To move their mission, vision, and values forward, drive revenue, make money, and be joyful in their work.

And that, my friends, is what we all want.

I get it.

Wage growth, record-high inflation and an extremely competitive labor market have all put business leaders in a difficult position.

But,

You can still have fun.

And you can do the following:

✅ Address employees’ pain and concerns about the increased cost of living so you can prevent them from disengaging or leaving the company in search of a higher salary elsewhere.

✅ Win the war for top talent that’s driving wage growth – and be able to entice new hires across the finish line, sometimes with great urgency to overcome other job offers on the table.

✅ Be smart with company financials and stick to budgets, especially in the face of a potential recession.

Control what you can control.  And adjust to the rest.

And have some freaking fun.

Many companies don’t put a lot of weight in ongoing training and development.

Because it’s often viewed as:

➡ Expensive
➡ Frivolous
➡ Never used once completed

Furthermore, company leaders often say, “We hire people who have the competencies we need. Why do they need extra training?”

The counterargument to that is that the workplace isn’t static – and your people can’t be either. Knowledge and skill development is never a one-and-done deal – no one walks in the door knowing everything they need to know at their job, nor can all this education take place in a single training session.

Plus, conditions are always evolving and require companies to keep up.
Furthermore, it’s not just always financially feasible to hire a candidate with the desired level of experience and mastery of all the skills you deem necessary.
