Depuis juillet 2019, j'ai également lancé Papa PhD, un podcast au sujet des carrières après le doctorat qui a depuis fait le tour du monde. Je suis passionné par la communication scientifique et par la création de projets multimédias autour de la science et de la communauté scientifique.

I’m introverted. I don’t like writing about myself. But I’d like to slowly change that.

If the last five years have taught me something, it’s that there is nothing as powerful for personal growth as meeting people in person and engaging in meaningful ways with them.

Launching the Papa PhD podcast in the summer of 2019 was pivotal in bringing me to this realization. Each guest, each interview, gave me butterflies. They still do. But each time the conversation ends, I am energized, inspired, deeply happy, and grateful.

For the first four years, Beyond the Thesis With Papa PhD was purely a passion project. Now, after over 250 episodes, it is evolving from a passion project to a professional one.

This year, I am stepping out of the shadow and writing a new chapter in my professional journey.

Why am I sharing this with you?

Because it applies to you, too.

Building your career and setting up your next job transition, cannot be done well in urgency. 

To reap a good harvest, you need to till the field in advance, sow, tend to it, weed it, and be patient. You can’t predict exactly what the crop will be, but what you can control is the care you put into it. Each day. Each week. Each month.

My point is this: 

Academic research takes a lot of your time and mental bandwidth. It’s almost 24/7. But you NEED to make space in your schedule to take care of future you.

Future you will appreciate three things: 

_A roadmap showing which ecosystems are a good fit for you in the job market. 
_A list of trusted contacts in each one of them.
_A great personal and professional story to continue writing.

One conversation at a time.

Once a month, swap your researcher’s hat for your explorer’s hat for a couple of hours. Make LinkedIn your time machine. Start collecting job postings and employers that inspire you. Reach out to people who can tell you more about what your professional future can look like.

The knowledge you will be gathering and, more importantly, the relationships you will be building will be your springboard to a smooth entry into the job market.

As the old adage says: “Slow and steady wins the race”.

Le doctorat nous prépare-t-il à enseigner ? Avec Émilie Deschênes

I wasn’t always proud of my #PhD title. I actually made the full circle from feeling proud, to confused, to ashamed, to proud again.

At some point, I felt ashamed because I felt lost in the job market and detached from “real world” after so many years spent in the ivory tower.

And then, slowly, I regained my confidence and embraced my academic background.

At the end of the day, despite what employees like to think, the #1 skill wanted by employers today turns out to be analytical thinking — even in the times of GenAI boom. 

Analytic thinking is a mindset. You cannot take a course to learn it — you need to grow into it through rigorous training, hardship, and challenging yourself with complex problems (e.g. via a PhD program).

So, cheers to the concept of PhD and to the problem-solvers of the world — with a PhD or without it! 🥂

Voici trois enseignements clés à retenir :

- **Travail en organisme à but non lucratif vs secteur privé** :
• Les organismes à but non lucratif s'articulent autour de la proximité humaine et de l'action concrète.
• Les différences salariales et de sécurité d'emploi sont significatives entre ces secteurs.

- **Transition du doctorat à la vie professionnelle** :
• La phase finale des études supérieures est longue et éprouvante - il faut bien s'y préparer et garder le cap.
• Il est crucial de préparer les étudiants à envisager différentes trajectoires professionnelles, y compris hors du monde académique.

- **Équilibre vie personnelle et vie professionnelle dans la recherche** :
• Importance de l'équilibre travail-vie personnelle, notamment après avoir fondé une famille.
• La pression de l'académie et la réalité du marché de l'emploi exigent une réflexion profonde sur le parcours professionnel souhaité.

I love my podcast den.🎙️🎧 It’s where I do my deepest work. But I can’t spend all day in there.

Diving deep into a project is easy for me. It’s a skill that has served me well - in creating my podcast, and during graduate school, too.

But throughout my professional life, the magic ingredient that has allowed me to grow, to innovate, and to make real quantum leaps professionally has been – 

People.

+ People I have worked with.
+ People I have worked for.
+ People I’ve only met online.
+ People I know IRL. 

Telling you my story and taking full credit for my achievements, leaving out all the conversations I had, all the people I met, all the role models I found, would be like sharing my secret sourdough bread recipe… but leaving out the sourdough starter. 😬 It might make me look great, but it would be sterile as advice or inspiration. 

The same applies to your journey.

Your research journey is a very personal experience, but every explorer needs a team for the voyage, and a village to come back to at the end.

Future you will need great peers to spitball with, great mentors to rely on, and a solid professional network to accompany you in your transition into the job market.

I know you are deep down in the mines of research, digging for that diamond, but trust me - once you have unearthed that gem, you will enjoy it much more if you have a village to share your story with.

So, leave your den every now and then. Build your team. Find your village.
