In this role  I exercise a diverse skill set across a wide range of technical and business challenges. Depending on the project I may be working closely with customers to facilitate Cloud Adoption and IaC principals, or else helping them migrate applications to the cloud.

Some notable projects include:
Providing Terraform Foundation training on behalf of Hashicorp
Leading an Organizational DevOps alignment project across entire engineering origination.
Developing GitOps Terraform IaC Pipelines
Building CI/CD pipelines to support Cloud Run and Application Deployments
Creating deployments for Terraform enterprise and Vault enterprise to Kubernetes clusters in GCP

Cloud Architect

Responsible for Site Reliability supporting approximately 20 sprint teams and 50 services, across 8 offices on 3 continents spanning 6 product lines that represent in excess of 150 million dollars in revenue.
Grew the team from three to nine engineers to support new products and multiple acquisitions.
Implemented new policies such as holding blameless postmortems, the creation of service level indicators and objectives (SLIs and SLOs) and using Kanban to manage workflow.
Created a DevOps/SRE Roadmap for better transparency across the organization.
Vendor management and negotiations. Reduced Cvent’s overall spend on third party services by negotiating better contacts. 
Implemented AWS costs saving in excess of 120k in a single year.

Engineering Manager, Site Reliability

Worked with DevOps team on road-mapping infrastructure changes for our AWS based Ruby on Rails platform. 

Designed and Implemented a number of changes including streamlined AWS infrastructure for easier management, deployment and cost savings. Migration from EC2 based Postgres to RDS based Postgres. Implementation of Consul for dynamic configuration management. Implementation of Terraform for turnkey environments. Reduced AWS costs by 1/3.
 
Designed multi-master / zero downtime migration for Postgres utilizing Bucardo

Created a local Docker repository for CI and Development use.

Built numerous internal services in Java using Dropwizard, Ruby and Go including the OpenSource projects (in Ruby) rdstune and mrtuner.

DevOps Architect

Design and Implement an Elastic Cloud Infrastructure with automation for a Ruby on Rails stack backed by PostgreSQL and MongoDB supporting Mobile Applications written for iOS and Android.

Create HA infrastructure for PostgreSQL and MongoDB implemented automatic failover using PgPool for PostgreSQL and Replica Sets for MongoDB.

Worked with developers to tune applications to work better with both PostgreSQL and MongoDB via query recommendations and better access patterns. 
	
Utilized Puppet to automate all servers within Amazon Web Services (AWS) which provides automatic provisioning of servers for PostgreSQL, MongoDB, PgPool, HAproxy and Ruby on Rails.

Automated Amazon Instance creation and control via a custom Ruby program based on Amazon's Ruby API / Fog.

Senior Database Administrator and DevOps Engineer

Northwest Evaluation Association

As DBA/Architect I am responsible for database infrastructure, administration and architecture for NWEAs next generation systems using PostgreSQL. This includes designing and implementing strategies for horizontal and vertical scaling, databases in the cloud, high availability, clustering and disaster recovery.

	In this role I have been responsible for the database architecture. I’ve worked through the full lifecycle of the project starting from requirements and moving on to specifications, macro design, micro design and eventually implementing the solution. 

	Extensive research into database scaling technologies such as PostgreSQL sharding and MultiMaster replication with Bucardo. POC with NoSQL and NewSQL solutions including MongoDB, CouchBase and VMWare SQLFire

         Designed multi-site configurations with focus on bursting into the cloud (AWS). Rolling upgrades, high availability with site to site fail over and zero downtime.            

         I’ve created an extensive automation structure for managing users, databases, data sets and monitoring servers. As well as developed a custom made self-service system for data refreshes for QA and Development Staff, written using php and perl.

Oracle Database Administrator

ACS Healthcare Provider Solutions

My work at ACS was a good mix of production and development DBA. I installed new systems, created and configured new databases for production contracts and maintain and manage the development environments. The environment consisted of multiple cluster databases utilizing Oracle RAC monitored by Oracle Grid.

Responsibilities: 
• Extensive monitoring and performance tuning of SQLs using AWR/Statspack and Quest Tools.
• Troubleshoot and resolve problems with Production and Test environments
• Perform System refreshes using oracle data pump
• Extensive shell scripting to assist monitoring and syncing the multiple environments
• Releasing new schema changes and data updates to the production environments
• Maintain standards to ensure HIPPA compliance 
• Provide 24 x 7 support to end users (rotating on-call)

I managed day to day activities for a team of 15 Technical Support Analysts supporting 5,000+ customers. I was responsible for recruiting, interviewing, hiring and training new employees as well as performing annual performance reviews, enforcing corporate standards and meeting metrics.

I worked closely with customer System Administrators and Database Administrators (Oracle, SQL Server) on critical system and implementation issues. Providing in-depth technical expertise in the areas of setup, performance, backup and recovery.

Additionally I was first point of contact for resolving customer escalations, connecting with 3rd party vendors and working with R&D to improve the product.

Some successful projects that I initiated include: 
• Call intake procedure enhancements, which resulted in an improvement of call output by 50%. 
• Implementation of an internal Wiki website for knowledge sharing and as a documentation repository.
• Developed and implemented a managed services offering for Infor which generated $160k additional income for the company over its first 2 years and for which I was awarded the companies "PRO Award" for outstanding professional excellence.

Oracle expert and a go-to guy for all customer related Oracle problems. Specialized in Oracle troubleshooting and performance tuning.
Worked closely with Oracle DBAs when they were unable to resolve problems with:
Installation and configuration of Oracle RDBMS (7.3.X, 8.0.X, 8i, 9i, 10g)
Provide In-depth analysis, tracing of database / query performance issues
Utilizing utlestat/utlbstat, statspack and AMRs as well as tkprof
Provide recommendations on database growth for capacity planning
Resolve both database and non-database related technical problems
Debug programs (PL/SQL, Baan 4GL, C)
Troubleshoot OS and connectivity issues. 

Worked daily with customers to resolve key system issues related to the Baan software. 
Some Baan specific tasks included:
Worked extensively with Baan Tools (Triton, Baan 4, Baan 5 and ERP LN) 
Troubleshoot problems with the Baan Driver (Oracle, Informix, MySQL, MSSQL, DB2) and 
Diagnose and resolve problems with Baan Shared Memory

Configure and tune Baan environments - Strong knowledge with Baan configuration files (tabledef, fdX, db_resource, etc)
In-depth testing of new porting sets

Coming from a strong Unix background I also was able to quickly master Baan and Oracle on multiple platforms: HP-UX, AIX, Compaq Tru64, Windows and Linux (SuSE/RedHat)

My database skills allowed me to also branch into learning the basics of Microsoft SQL Server as well as IBM's UDB (DB2) on multiple platforms.

Senior Technical Support Analyst (Oracle Expert)

My work at ComauPico was primarily as Sr. Baan Systems Administrator and Oracle DBA. I maintained the Baan and Oracle systems on a 24x7 on-call basis. I wrote and maintained system and application monitoring programs across all systems. I wrote shell scripts and PL/SQL programs to automate repetitive tasks. I managed security, upgrades, patching, backup and recovery of the Baan and Oracle systems. My duties also included meeting with end users to determine system requirements and researching new products, software and new methods for doing business. 
	
Along with my administration duties I did some development, including designing and coding Pro*C programs to run an internal homegrown barcode scanning system using Intermec scanners. This design had to take into account installation, setup and maintenance of 45 Oracle-NT databases, barcode scanners and networking. Another project involved developing PL/SQL code for use with Oracle 9i AS to create a CRM website to connect suppliers and customer's to ComauPico's inventory / ordering system.

I'm a generalist who loves to automate all the things with a broad skill set ranging from DevOps and Databases to Leading teams.

I'm able to leverage a deep technical background including experience with Cloud technologies such as AWS and GCP. Docker and Kubernetes, Linux, Databases, CI/CD and languages such as Python, Go and Java to solve critical business issues.

I'm able to look at things from a business perspective, lead and grow employees and teams to meet goals/KPIs/OKRs.
