I started working remotely in 2018 - wayyy before it became cool. So, when I heard all these big companies rush to embrace remote work in 2020, I knew it was going to end in disaster. Remote work is not about trying to operate the way a business normally would from an office. Remote work is a different system of operation entirely You make people own outcomes and have a clear communication style. Async works but your team has to be trained for it. Someone who has worked in-office all their life will find remote work challenging, at least for the first few months. Some people love a co-working space, some prefer a cafe, others carve out an home office. And in some cases, we go through different phases. My first remote work office was the dining room of my parent's house. Soon enough, I switched to a co-working space. But in the last 5 years, I have had a home office. Remote work is not about working from home It is freedom to work from wherever works for each person Remote work is not about being lazy It is the discipline to self-manage and be outcome-driven Remote work breaks down wealth inequality barriers Remote work reduces company costs on commercial property Remote work makes parents more present with their kids Remote work reduces commute, reduces emissions, and adds more life to each day I didn't choose to be a remote work advocate.
