Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc.

Hardware and software debugging of liquid handling automation platform (Hamilton STAR). I helped the organization onboard new liquid handling protocols to streamline detection of coronavirus in saliva and NP samples. My efforts helped deliver throughput capability to over 50K samples per day. Proud member of Ginkgo’s world class Automation Team.

Implementation of http server for interprocess communication between Hamilton Software Ecosystem and custom Ginkgo software developed in Python.

Hardware and software debugging of robotics platform. I helped the organization obtain CE-Marking by diagnosing issues with their pre-production allergy diagnostics platform. I worked in the systems engineering division. CE-Marking achieved in Dec 2017.

Identified critical design and manufacturing defects in pre-production robotics instrumentation.
Proposed and oversaw implementation of solutions to remove defects.
Developed software script in C# to interpret proprietary debugger (byte code) to enable rapid identification automation failures.

Sr. Systems Engineer (Consultant)

Vala Sciences

Integration of collaborative robot to fully automate companies proprietary drug discovery platform. Developed and tested new consumable electrodes for companies Kinetic Image Cytometry platform. The electrodes provide robust, non- biofouling electrical pacing (stimulation) of Cardiomyocytes, Neurons, and Stem Cells.

Key Contributions:
Integrated Precise Automation PF400s collaborative SCARA robot with Vala’s cytometer, the CyteSeer IC200. Control GUI and interface drivers programmed using LabView. Customized Precise Automation’s open source GPL communication driver to enhance features required for robot integration.

Redesigned Vala’s old electrical stimulation circuit board to enable multi-parameter sensing, bi-polar signal generation, amplitude control, and achieve pacing frequencies up to 15kHz. Designed circuit, schematic capture and layout using LTSpice, Altuim, and PCB Artist.

Tested components on live Cardiomyocytes cultures to verify pacing performance.

Sr. Hardware & Software Development Engineer (Consultant)

Biological Dynamics

Directed the development and testing of the company's hardware platform from inception through commercial readiness for FDA clinical trials. Laid the ground work for the company's OncoState™ assay, OmniVerita™ system and NanoVerita™ system. 

The technology rapidly extracts and quantifies relevant biomarkers directly from a few drops (250 microliters) of a patients blood sample without any preprocessing in under 20 minutes.

Key Contributions:
Successfully ran 3 pre-clinical trials to establish proof of concept for technology and clinical application of cell-free DNA in oncology and trauma. Results used to secure SBIR funding from NIH and private investors for continued  development. Presented scientific findings at conferences and generated 14 patents. 

Designed the company’s proprietary microelectrode array technology and developed the software platform for hardware control, data acquisition, image processing, and data analysis. Image and data analysis done using MatLab, Python, and R. Programmed and tested various embedded micro-controllers to control proprietary hardware platform using C, C#, and LabView.

Scaled manufacturing of TR(ACE)™ micro fluidics cartridge, analytical instrument, and assay kit by working with external foundry, injection molding house, ISO certified commercial kitting, liquid filling, and assembly facilities.

Managed a diverse cross-functional team of 25 molecular biologists, engineers, theoretical physicists, and business analysts.

Managed relationship with collaborators at Scripps Research Institute, Rady Children’s Hospital, Sharp Grossmont Center for Cancer Treatment, Raytheon, and University of California, San Diego (Moores Cancer Center, Department of Nanoengineering, and Hillcrest Medical Center).

Worked with Regulatory Affairs team to ensure development of medical device and assay using GMP, 21 CFR 820, and ISO 13485 regulations. Successfully registered FDA Class I nucleic acid sample preparation device in December 2014.

Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute

Graduate Research Assistant in the Price Lab for Analytical and Quantitative Microscopy. Helped developed high content screening instrumentation for drug discovery related to oncology, heart disease and stem cell differentiation.

Key Contributions:
Developed continuous scanning high content screening (HCS) instrument using laser autofocus, time delay and integrate (TDI) ccd technology, and multi-spectral LED illumination. HCS instrument used to increase chemical compound screening throughput for drug discovery. Software control written using Matlab, LabView, C++, and C#. 

Developed 1st generation Kinetic Image Cytometer (KIC). Installed in stem cell core facility at Sanford Burnham Prebys Institute. Device used for automated capture and analysis of calcium transients in cell cultures for stem cell research, drug discovery and toxicity studies. Software control written in LabView and C#.

Developed image analysis tools using C#, Matlab, Java, and LabView. Used open source software (CellProfiler, CyteSeer, and ImageJ) to quantify cellular morphology and dynamics.

Presented scientific findings at conferences and generated unique IP for calcium transient image cytometry.

Commercial variants of the instrumentation is currently being marketed and sold by Vala Sciences.
