At just 10-20% capacity, that scales to $100,000/year. We’ve spent the last two years talking about how AI will replace salaries. We forgot to talk about the fact that you can’t renegotiate an API bill

Humans have fixed costs. AI has "exponential" costs: Agents don’t have intuition. They waste tokens validating things that don’t need validation and spinning up sub-agents for simple tasks.

There's a chance that subsidizing may end soon. Like Uber, prices were cheap until they won the market, then raised. We’ve been living on VC-subsidized pricing. I'm not too sure where this ends up, it's a mixed bag for me. Can argue it plays out like Cloud

Chamath Palihapitiya said developers now need to be at least 2x as productive just to justify the compute cost

If your AI strategy is "replace people to save money," you might find yourself trading a flexible salary for a rigid, skyrocketing API bill that doesn't care about your runway

And employees can stick around during rough patches, but the API keeps running full cost! 

I'm all-in on AI, but you cannot negotiate an API bill the way you can a salary. 

Token management and guard rails are more important than ever before. 

Ensuring you're using the right vendors, API vs monthly plans, etc is important. There's a way to do it effectively.

Agent economics are a thing.
