Since those humble beginnings, Mike Carney Toyota has expanded to become a crucial business to the North Queensland Economy. I started out in New Toyota Vehicle Sales for mainly walk in traffic and was then promoted to the Commercial Vehicle Manager which specialised to customers within regional areas around Queensland. In my best year I sold 207 cars and made the Top 20 Toyota Salesman within Australia.

In 2020, I left the corporate world to embark on my entrepreneurship journey.

The biggest differences I have found since switching from contingent to retained only. 

Life-changing in short. 

🧨 Having a contingent-only pipeline felt like high-stakes gambling, which created much more stress. 

I like gambling, but not at levels where you are constantly losing sleep. 

✅ Retained has helped drive a more methodical approach to research and to deeper engagement with each market's talent base. 

There is no need to "rush" because you aren't racing to reach the best people first. 

✅ When a high performer hears that the firm you are working with has retained you, there is an instant respect that the firm is investing in getting the right person. 

It makes them sit up and take notice, and I have felt that shift a lot.  

✅ The partnership and trust grow at a much faster pace. Through transparency,  my clients get to understand the market on a whole new level. 

It is easy to think you know the market, but until it is truly mapped and put in front of you, you don't. 

All in all, it is a better way for me to work, and a much better experience for clients and candidates. 

Anyone thinking about making the pivot to retained, as long as you take the time to map out a clear delivery methodology, make the shift. 

It is, by far, the best way to build and the best way to work.
