Since those humble beginnings, Mike Carney Toyota has expanded to become a crucial business to the North Queensland Economy. I started out in New Toyota Vehicle Sales for mainly walk in traffic and was then promoted to the Commercial Vehicle Manager which specialised to customers within regional areas around Queensland. In my best year I sold 207 cars and made the Top 20 Toyota Salesman within Australia.

Welcome to the Political Games Championship Stage of your Recruitment Leadership career. 

I hated the political games, but learnt very quickly that you'd better start playing. 

Some people were like Roger Federer in his prime, the version where he wouldn't drop a set in the majors.

I didn't experience this until I moved to Asia and was at Manager level in the Hays career path. 

It takes five promotions to get to Manager and four more to get to Managing Director. 

Manager ➡️ Snr Manager ➡️ Business Director ➡️ Regional Director ➡️ Managing Director

This is the Political Games Stage. Like it or hate it, this is your new reality. 

This is what I decided to do:  

1. Absolutely smash targets and never be content with just scraping to hit them. This doesn't make you immune from the games, but it will give you a lot of power to deflect some of them.

2. Identify who is going to have a say in your promotions and build a relationship with them. You don't have to like them, but if they are deciding your future, then you need a plan to deal with them. 

3. Walk the Talk. Lead by example and stay in the trenches as much as you can. A lot of the brilliant Political Games gurus love to look at spreadsheets and tell, not show. Separate yourself on this. 

4. Focus on accelerating the abilities of every person on your team. Unlock their "why" and build a plan that allows them to overachieve. The more star performers you can create, the quicker you accelerate your career. 

5. Ask for more when the time is right (straight after smashing your targets is always a good time 😉 ). If you don't ask, you won't receive. 

If you intend to reach the top and you don't have a plan, you will plateau and cap out at a certain level. 

As the saying goes, don't hate the player, hate the game.....
