I have spent my life studying how people and workplaces can be happier. If I could summarise everything I've learned into only 2 statements it would be these: 1. Happiness matters 2. Happiness is a skill Allow me to explain: Too often, people and workplaces, focus on success - often at the expense of their happiness. They fall into the trap of believing that they will be happy when they achieve (insert any goal here) but all this leads to is chronic mental health challenges, high levels of burnout, decreasing job satisfaction, and (ironically) a reduced sense of success. When we flip the script and start prioritising happiness then a positive ripple effect spreads: We become better partners, better leaders, better colleagues, better friends, and better people when we're happy and well compared to when we're stressed, burnt out, and overwhelmed. And workplaces benefit too with outcomes including higher engagement, improved customer service, increased revenue and profits, and the ability to be positioned as an employer of choice. Now onto the second statement, and the good news: Happiness is a skill. That means with the right training, resources, and support it can be grown. Since 2017 this is what myself and my team at BU Happiness College have been doing - growing global happiness by helping individuals and organisations better measure, understand, and improve their mental and emotional wellbeing. Over that time we have won numerous awards including: - Social Enterprise of the Year 2020 - United Nations SDG Champion of 2022 I've also been included in publications such as Psychology Today, the Harvard Business Review, and Thrive Global. Most importantly, I'm grateful to have created a movement that delivers results such as: - Increasing our members happiness by an average of 57% within their first 12 months at BU Happiness College - Helping workplaces to stand out in their field as an employer of choice by becoming an Accredited Happy Workplace.
