Sara was a highly ambitious, Senior Sales Leader.

They say the older you get, the less you care what others think.

But this is not true for everyone.

And it can have consequences for your career.

There is no quick fix for this. 

It requires awareness of:

What motivates you in your 40s and 50s,

Isn't the same as your 20s and 30s.

Status, title, long hours, fancy companies?

We change.

I stepped onto the career ladder in my 20s as a Lawyer:
↳I was single,
↳Had the energy to work 14 hours
↳Loved the money and prestige

In my early 30s I joined Management Consulting:
↳I was keen to travel the globe
↳Promotions were my priority

Fast forward to my 40s:👇

→I am married with 2 kids
→I'd rather take a trip to IKEA than a work trip to Paris

The biggest shift is I've optimized my career for purpose.
↳Leveraging 20 years experience to help build happier, more purpose-driven careers and businesses.

The corporate climb lost its shine.

So listen to yourself.

If you are not happy with where you are, lean in to who you are.

And recognize that maybe your motivation and drivers have changed.

I started my career chasing a lot of $$.

Here's the story of my career trajectory.
And how I attained my version of "success."

𝟭/ 𝗜𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝘀, 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆.
 ↳So I became a lawyer.

→ I was highly entitled 
→ Blew my money on pointless stuff
→ Learnt a lot but didn’t relish the experience


𝟮/ 𝗜𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝟯𝟬𝘀: 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆.  
 ↳So I became a Management Consultant. 

→ Worked with smart people
→ Led and hired great teams but
→ Was constantly worn-out and wondering "is this it?"

Then after my dad died and I had kids, what I thought I wanted changed. 


𝟯/ I𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝟰𝟬𝘀: 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.
 ↳So I led sales pursuits for remote SaaS businesses.

→ Loved the people & freedom
→ Become a commercial wizard
→ Hated the target-driven pressure.

📌  But importantly, I used the time to redefine what I really wanted.

And finally realised my key motivational driver was "purpose and impact."
↳So I set up my  Leadership & Career Coaching practice. 


Priorities and values change as we get older.

But a truly high performing career is primarily grounded in 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁.

This is what makes it sustainable and fulfilling.

When you have this, the constant search for something more ends. 

And then what will follow is:
→Wealth
→Growth
→True potential

It was a sad time in history and emotions ran high.

𝟭/𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 

→ Thousands of people lost their jobs overnight
(Grown men were crying in the streets of London)
→Always have a Plan B no matter what
→Never create an identity solely around your career

→ It takes someone great to: (i) Bring humour (ii) Protect teams from burn-out and (iii) Manage their own stress 
→We will forever remember the impact of these leaders 


𝟯/ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲

→ Businesses collapse, people lose their jobs, new businesses emerge etc 
→ "Resilience" is a key career/life skill
→ Pick yourself up and reinvent yourself. Never give up!


Nothing in career (or life) is permanent. 

Take a risk and make sure you enjoy the journey because you do not know what tomorrow brings.

Consulting gives you thousands of options. This can be confusing.

I did a lot of technical projects that did not align with my strengths or interests.

This made things feel much harder than they needed to.


𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 
→ Gain clarity and then advocate for yourself
→ Don’t expect others to know where you will shine
→ Interesting work will make the difficult feel easier

𝟮/ 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽

When there is a business need, it is difficult to reconcile this with individual needs.

So in any business, it can be hard to find truly objective mentors. 

I tried to figure it all out myself and this meant I made a lot of bad decisions along the way.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 
→ Do not try to figure everything out yourself!
→ Create your own objective Board of Advisors 
→ Make them diverse for the richest perspectives

𝟯/ 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱

I was constantly head down in delivery mode.Too busy to think about my brand, visibility or networking.

Even on LinkedIn, I had like 200 connections.

When I decided to launch my business, I had to work 200 times harder than necessary to re-engage old networks and build new ones.

→ Never stop networking /brand building 
→ It will open up so many doors when you need it to

Few career decisions are irreversible.

If you decided to leave Corporate to become self-employed, it doesn't mean you can't go back to Corporate.

      ↳Sometimes the data isn't there. Trust your gut

❌ Don't speak to 100 different people
      ↳You’ll get 100 different opinions. This is confusing.


👉 Instead, know your values, priorities, skills and interests.

And define your North Star based on these.

It will help you make better decisions.

And you will be happier overall.

𝟭/ 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵

Stress manifests differently in men who are taking more action around their mental health. 

Burnout is prevalent in industries where job security and promotions are impacted by market changes.


𝟮/ 𝗥𝗲-𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

Remote working has provided the space to reflect on what truly matters, free from societal pressures.

This allows for more introspection and exploration of personal and professional goals.


𝟯/ 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸

The more senior you become, the scarcer the feedback. Especially in hybrid-remote work environments. 

Men are less inclined to seek out feedback willingly which makes progression more difficult.


👉My own experience in corporate taught me a valuable lesson: to overcome obstacles, it's essential to acknowledge you can't do it alone.

→ Those who speak first or last are better remembered
→ Jump in strong with "My view on this is..."


𝟯/ 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳

→ Creates the perception that you are confident/in charge
→ Sit up straight and lean forward


Whilst the loudest voice may get noticed,

the voice of reason is the most respected.
