For whoever needs to hear this--- don't EVER accept money from someone who is not an ideal client.

Even if you know you can deliver excellent results...

Even if they are in an emergency and begging you...

Even if you need the money...

Because if that person is not of good character or a complainer, it will come back to bite you.

Remember that delivering results and client happiness are not the same thing.

All too often, we feel like we need to "close every deal" and accept being treated like a vendor.

But you as a services provider should be vetting potential clients-- choosing to work only with the ones who qualify and don't exhibit "nightmare client" behavior.

Because that one nightmare client, no matter how much money they want to pay you-- will cost you your sanity, drive your best people crazy, and try to ruin your reputation-- even after you refund them.

This afternoon I sat through a disgusting presentation on how to sell local businesses on AI services.

Scare them into buying by mentioning that their competitors are doing it.

Talk about how fast AI is changing and how you don't want to be left behind.

Share a couple quotes by Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, and whoever.

This is called FUD selling-- Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.

I'm sure it works, especially in conjunction with the cold, mass outreach they recommend that marketing companies do.

But there's one critical thing missing....

This salesperson is so busy going through each slide of their presentation, they forgot to say anything about that local business to demonstrate they've even looked at their stats or analyzed specifically what's working for them or not.

The sales bro is a snake oil seller pitching their cure-all magical potions.

Instead of the trained medical doctor that wants to look at your MRI and bloodwork before making a diagnosis, and well before treating the patient.

If you hear an "expert" jumping straight into recommending a treatment (which is the same thing they recommend for everyone), skipping collecting data and doing analysis, RUN.

Because what that local business wants is their phone to ring.

Not more cool AI tools-- even if's 85% off until tonight or for the next 10 people who buy now.

Local service businesses simply need to show up on Google in the maps, search results, YouTube, social media, PAA, SGE, and anywhere else that someone in Dallas with a broken air conditioner would be looking.

They don't want to distracted by the latest technology-- they want to be more Googleable.

Amen?

But the sales bro doesn't have the time to analyze each business for how Googleable they are-- and they usually don't know how.

Too busy pitching and breathlessly proclaiming they have the magic answer.

Let's run the snake oil sellers out of town by letting everyone know it takes 5 seconds to look at how Googleable you are.

We think “Subject matter experts” will be commoditized, with a very small handful turning into rock stars.

If you're an expert on marketing, AI can commoditize ordinary information about marketing. 

But if you are on the cutting edge of any subject, people need someone they can trust. 

And AI is not very good at giving you information if less than 200 people are talking about it.
What didn't change is that people want to learn from people. And the need for trust went up 10X.

AI has dropped from the #1 topic among digital agencies last year to #5.

75% of agencies polled said AI is going to break their business, but only 7% are doing something about it.

But you all look the same, churning out garbage at greater scale.

With the noise and overwhelm, you stand out with a strong personal brand.

Which is NOT to talk about yourself (the #1 mistake in people thinking they are doing personal branding), but to elevate your relationships.

Then you never need to “sell” ever again.

You never need to do “SEO” again.

Presented at InOrbit.AI  this morning in Slovenia.

When I had no money after a tiresome day of calls and work, I'd cook a "struggle meal" with ingredients that cost less than $1 total.

While eating my struggle meal alone, I'd watch chefs on YouTube crafting the most delicious things you could imagine.

I'd pretend I was eating the food on the screen-- when actually I was eating grilled chicken quarters, which cost $6.97 for a 10 pound bag, plus frozen corn.

Since then, I've been able to actually eat those gourmet meals thanks to generous friends and conference organizers.

But I still like to cook my "struggle meals"-- not because I want to remind myself of how hard I've worked, but because I actually enjoy it.

I'm eating my struggle meal right now, fact.

Do you view your struggles as something positive, too?

I get all these guys pitching to edit videos for me, send emails for me, and do my social media.

But not one of them has demonstrated they can create content that resonates with smart marketers and home service businesses.

So let me ask you…

If someone can’t write as you or stand in for you, should you let them?

Is your community fooled by some guy using the hottest AI tools, enough to think that you or I wrote it?

So am I saying we shouldn’t hire people who aren’t as skilled or experienced as us?

No—- I’m saying hire them to REPURPOSE your existing videos and articles.

Not to write new stuff from scratch pretending to be you.

Yesterday, I had Nilson Silva on my podcast in his studio.

After we spent the whole day together learning about the very specific details of how he immigrated to the United States at the age of 13, was jailed for overstaying, hustled his way into growing multiple pool businesses, and helped other immigrants succeed.

So many specific stories— which ChatGPT doesn’t yet know.

The point is that the capture of raw stories is separate from the processing of these details via whatever your favorite tool or video editor.

And whoever is using such tools, no matter how fancy the tool or how good at SEO that person thinks they are….

The result is only as good as the understanding the worker himself has of the content.

The users of AI tools must be able to have thoughtful conversations with the tool to get meaningful output.

Which is not the same as a mindless VA dumping stuff into the AI tool, which is what’s happening now.

Empathetic conversations with the AI requires active listening and empathy, not a list of abracadabra secret phrases called “prompts” that unlock magic powers.

How would some random video editor who doesn’t keenly understand what you do be able to select what moments in your life would be most meaningful to your audience?

Or to know which statements you make are truly expert and thought provoking for other experts in your field?

They're called honey pots.

How much do you want to bet that it's a dude behind this "fashion designer" profile?

You get these, too?

How many marketing companies promise top rankings in Google, but they themselves can't be found when you Google them?

How many sales experts promise "20 new leads ever month guaranteed" when they themselves are struggling to get new clients?

How many PR companies promise to make you famous, when they themselves have never been on TV, spoken at major industry conferences, or even written a high profile article?

And the latest-- how many AI experts peddle the magic promises of AI but don't actually use it themselves?

If you're actually an expert at what you do (could be roofing in Atlanta or plumbing in Dallas, for example), you don't need to hire a social media expert.

Unless they are well-connected in Dallas and also have years of experience fixing toilets-- if you're a Dallas plumber.

Because what Google is looking for is authentic signals that you actually do the thing you say you do in the city you say you do it.

If ever you're not sure about someone hitting you up, making a big promise to you-- consider if they are peddling shortcuts designed only to trick Google or social media....

Or if they are doing things to make your actual experience more visible-- to actually build relationships with people in your industry and your city.

Google can now see right through the SEO "experts" that seek only to trick them.

And that's why you're seeing so many websites crater and so many marketing companies falling apart right now-- which causes them to plead more insistently.

Google yourself and Google them before you ever get on a call.

Spammers are getting more sophisticated.

This spammer sent a note to one of our team members posing as me.

My guess is that anyone who has a lot of VAs could be vulnerable here, since a VA who gets a note from you about a "major urgent assignment" might fall for it.

Even if you have screening practices to hire only A players, some VAs might still fall for it.

If you're struggling as a new agency owner or digital marketer to get results, this is the hidden reason why and how to overcome it.

This article has stood the test of time--- I've watched thousands of digital marketers win and lose. 

It's always this reason or a derivative-- even if people don't want to acknowledge it.
