Being Introverted is our superpower.

Here's how to thrive as an introvert entrepreneur.

My friend Francois du Toit CFP® and I had the pleasure of meeting in person this week and while chatting we learned that each of us is an introvert.

Both of is were surprised given how vocal we are.

Both of us have struggled opening up when in groups of people.  

Being in a group of people can be terrifying for introverts.  It's not natural for us to open up, make small talk, or (gulp) present to a larger group of people.

What's almost worse is the anxiety leading up to any situation where we have to confront our introvertedness (not sure that's a word!).

This is especially challenging for introverts who find themselves in entrepreneurial and/or sales roles that by definition require one to be extroverted.

Two things have helped us cope with our introvert anxiety:

1) Content creation and social media.

2) Asking the question "What do you like to do when you're not working?"

These outlets help us break through and build relationships without making us too uncomfortable.  The last thing an introvert wants is to talk about themselves!

In fact they have let us tell our stories and build lots of meaningful relationships, relationships that we crave and do really well with when one on one or in small groups.

What I've noticed is that over the last 5 or so years of content creation I have become more comfortable around people and have less anxiety leading up to it.  Content Creation was the medicine we needed.

What's your top tip to thrive as an introvert?

Long distance relationships work.

Chances are you're missing out on some amazing friendships and opportunities.

I used to be closed minded about technology and forming long distance relationships, but it turns out I was wrong.

I just traveled 9,000 miles and shared an amazing time together with friends I'd never met in person before.

Without technology and an open mindset I never would have become friends with Kobus Kleyn CFP® . , Francois du Toit CFP®, and Bennie Gouws, CFP® CA(SA).

Technology and thinking outside the box can be great facilitators in human connection when we are intentional about it.

But ultimately we are human beings and crave in person human connection.

Meeting my friends for an afternoon braai in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa was set in motion years ago by connecting on LinkedIn, having some virtual meetings, and recording some podcasts.

My advice?

Expand your boundaries.

Stop thinking about postal codes and time zones, start thinking about deeper connections, and use technology to make it all happen.

Your kids don't care how much you make or how successful you are.

They won't remember the deals you closed, BUT will remember the dinners, bedtimes, birthday parties, and sporting events you missed.

Here's some food for thought and my top tip on how to be there more for your kids.

"75% of the time you’ll ever get to spend with your kids is over by the time they turn 12.  90% of your time with them is gone by the time they’re 18.”

When I first became a dad it felt like I had plenty of time to be a good parent, we've got 18 years before they leave home right?

I focused on being an entrepreneur, on working a ton, and even when I was home my mind was elsewhere.

I think we all struggle with this.

But time does fly and I started to notice a void I was feeling with my kid.  No deal or amount of money will ever fill this void, only quality time with your kids will.

My top tip for not missing time and special moments with your kids is.....

➡️ Include them in your life ⬅️

Here's a couple of ways I do this:

🟢 Take them on trips, even business trips.  I bring my wife and son with me as much as possible.

🟢 Schedule time with your kids before anything work related.  We call this "Team Papa Time". It's special father-son time.

🟢 Ask them what they want to do and then go do it!  Like this quad-biking experience that my son found for us.

Our kids are our future.  Part of setting them up for success is teaching them about money, business, etc. of course but also showing them that you love them and prioritize them over this thing we call work.
