the single best community builder in tech: Ben Lang. why was Café Cursor so good?

1️⃣ create tribes. humans love commonalities, and your users all have at least one thing in common, they all use your product! leverage their commonalities (like coffee!) on a hyperlocal scale, you'll hear valuable insights and earn users that love you/your brand more than the others. especially in the AI era, that brand love means a lot. tribes scale much faster than features.

2️⃣ curated experiences are ultra-memorable. I have an admission to make: I kept an extra Cafe Cursor cup. it's a small detail that turned a fleeting moment into a memorable interaction. Ben does a great job at deepening long-term emotional attachment. 

3️⃣ offline creates trust online. in a world of digital interactions, showing up in-person makes a tangible difference. I see Ben doing stuff online all the time, but him showing up to buy everyone coffee was not on my bingo card. he gave us something rare: the ability to put a friendly face and personality to the online profile and brand. trust granted.

I had such a great time hanging with Ben and everyone there!

this year at OpenAI DevDay I got the tour from Sam and…

…ok not really but WOW is this video (Sora 2) pretty amazing or what! a few thoughts:

- it gave me an “Undefeated” shirt, a brand from LA (my home town), but that’s not what I wore when filming the training video. freaky.

- it looks like it gave me a tattoo on my left forearm, a spot I’ve been considering a tattoo for a few months now. 2x freaky.

- this is the worst it’ll ever be, and it’s outstanding. they launched Sora 2 in the API today, I expect AI video to have a vibecoding moment in the next few months. everyone will become a content creator very soon.
