From Micro to Macro: Zooming Out on Energy 🔋🌍

What an amazing day at the second USC Energy Business Summit 2025 at the Zage Business of Energy Initiative, a chance to step back and see the energy landscape from a holistic perspective.

 I’m still amazed that a conference of this caliber is free to attend.

This year’s conversations carried a powerful message:
We don’t have enough energy, we’re in an energy expansion, not a transition.

Nuclear will play a bigger role than ever, but it also depends on critical minerals like copper, which are increasingly difficult and costly to produce (since 1900, the energy required to produce one pound of copper has grown 16x, while water use has doubled).

And the rise of AI 🤖 is pushing demand even further. Just one prompt consumes ~0.34 watt-hours of energy and ~0.322 ml of water (Sam Altman). Data centers are projected to use 1,000 TWh annually by 2026, nearly the same as Japan’s total electricity use.

What struck me most was the spirit of collaboration: “We’re not competing against each other. We need all forms of energy, and we need to support each other.”

✨ Saying “No” with Love ✨

My mom was recently telling me a long story about why she couldn’t do something for someone. It was such a detailed story, one she repeated so many times that it almost became true. Everyone around her shared the same version, so it made perfect sense… she wasn’t being rude, she just “had her reasons.”

And I thought, why do we need to build such stories instead of simply saying, “No, I don’t want to”?
 I actually told her this, and she genuinely paused and said, “Oh… why not?” It felt so unfamiliar to her because if you’ve never done it, it does feel uncomfortable at first.

Why is it so hard to set boundaries honestly and unapologetically?
How many times do we justify our “NO”, explaining why we can’t go to dinner, take on another task, or keep a bit of distance, just to make others like us or to avoid being “the bad guy”?

Family, colleagues and friends often feel entitled to question your decisions until you offer a justification that fits their standards of what’s acceptable. In some cultures, more than others but it doesn’t have to be that way. 
Your loved ones will keep loving you 😉

The truth is:
 💛 We don’t need to lie.
 💛 We don’t need to be unkind or unreliable.
 💛 We can simply say no, with love.

Boundaries don’t mean rejection, they mean respect. For ourselves and for others.

Let’s practice that more often:
 ✨ “No” with love.
 ✨ Boundaries with love.
