Biotechnology Design is a question driven, cross-disciplinary, modular and iterative research field. Characteristics that are hampered by traditional publishing, as researchers want to explore speculative, not yet perfected models and use tools and collaborators from fields they may not be familiar with and may not traditionally work with. These researchers need a forum where biologists, engineers, AI experts and designers can come together and experiment to find the solutions that the 21st century requires -be that to find answers for food production, to build materials (for clothing, housing, everyday objects), to facilitate travel or to address health issues. Research Directions: Biotechnology Design is a fantastic opportunity to push the boundaries of research in the area to ensure smarter, more sophisticated solutions to intrinsically difficult research questions and challenges.

As a postdoctoral researcher at USC, I delved into the mechanisms of input-output computation within single neurons in the Drosophila melanogaster model. Using electrophysiology and confocal microscopy, I closely studied how individual neurons process and integrate synaptic inputs, generating output patterns that underpin complex behaviors. This work involved a nuanced understanding of how neurons respond to varying types of sensory inputs, capturing high-resolution data that revealed the intricacies of single-neuron computation.

I also employed knock-out models of Drosophila to investigate how specific ion channels and proteins influence neuronal electrophysiology. By selectively disabling genes encoding key ion channels or regulatory proteins, I could observe changes in neural activity patterns and assess the functional roles of these molecules in real-time neuronal processing. This comprehensive approach allowed me to map out the contribution of various channels and proteins in shaping neuronal excitability and response characteristics, contributing to a deeper understanding of how single-neuron computations are regulated at the molecular level in the Drosophila nervous system. This experience at USC enriched my technical skill set and broadened my insights into the cellular and molecular basis of neural computation.

Postdoctoral Scholar/Research Associate

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Working in Nobel laureate lab Moser to study grid cells and the brain's spatial computing system. During this time I have managed the design and delivery of a custom two photon imaging system, as well as its installation and testing, based on my previous work at TUM and MPI Neurobiology on establishing the LOTOS method. The LOTOS method uses low power temporal oversampling and femtosecond level laser pulses in order to image living neurons and their dendrite and spine inputs from other neurons. This was one of the first times we were able to observe grid cells via imaging, as they are located deep in the brain (Medial Entorhinal Cortex) and required using a prism insertion inside the living brain of mice to redirect fluorescence back into the microscope. All in all, the research helped coin single neuron computation of visual, auditory and sensory inputs in order to produce a spatial map from grid cells in the living brain, using a virtual reality environment.

I conducted extensive due diligence across the neurotech and brain-machine interface (BMI) fields, assessing both nascent technologies and established labs for their potential to drive transformative advancements. This involved scanning the global landscape for breakthrough innovations and conducting detailed, data-driven evaluations of the most promising ventures. I then developed strategic roadmaps to guide OS Fund’s investment decisions, ensuring alignment with the fund’s mission to support frontier technologies that amplify human potential.

This role at OS Fund gave me in-depth experience in investment analysis, helping me recognize technologies with disruptive potential at their earliest stages and setting the foundation for scalable impact.
