Is it time to post some unhinged, emotional, or divisive rant again? 

Or should I start making videos and infographics that show how I make the (vegan) sausage?

If I had my way, all I’d do is make movies, TV shows and videos — which I haven’t done in years because it was too expensive and I had a job and life to maintain.

But things have changed a bit and I want to play around. I want to use those film and writing degrees and fold in what I need from the newer tools. 

But I really can’t afford a bunch of subscriptions. 

And jobs seem to want “proof” that we can do this and aren’t willing to look at adjacent experience and “how we think”. 

So… does anyone know how I can purchase a bundle for like $20 or get a ton of free trials or something? Most tools like Midjourney don’t seem to offer that.

On another note: if you think we can’t use these tools just because we haven’t done it in our previous jobs, then you don’t really have a firm grasp on what it’s like to learn new technology (learn a few and you kind of know them all — and tutorials are everywhere). More importantly, if you’re only looking for a specific background, then you don’t know what it’s like to be underpaid and underresourced for years on end, nor what’s it’s like to work with founders and execs with different goals that include “everything yesterday” and building a strategic narrative, clarity across teams, basic MOps, and tons of messaging docs and assets before getting to the juicy creatives — often with no budget for even tools. Please stretch a little.

P.S. My dog says I should have mentioned I’d still play with her and save animals every chance I got even if I could make videos all day. She’s really offended that I didn’t lead with that.

P.S.S. I’m on the job hunt and hoping for something that allows more creativity and budget than I’ve had in the past. I don’t need a team, dedicated agency, or even tons of freelancers (unless you have insane growth goals like you want to see a million dollars, set yourself up for the next funding round, or get acquired in a quarter). But I do need some budget and patience for exploring tools and channels, and a manager/founder who understands the need to focus, prioritize, and do things well (no, professionalism is not perfectionism — within reason. And no, you shouldn’t have FOMO because you can’t scale or even test every channel right now; what matters is what your ICP responds to, not what you think works or your dog told you works).

I temporarily changed my profile picture to a random selfie because I clearly do not look like the other photo I had ;). Is there anyone in the Bay Area or Sacramento open to taking a good photo of me for trade of some kind?

I read an exciting story for those of us "words people" working in tech. Some lady was doing really well in her advanced coding class though her solutions were unusual and it was her first coding class -- because she had studied a language and learned how to apply language learning rules to coding. 

That's very uplifting for us non math brains who've been taught that coding is for the math nerds. 

And you know, I may not be that great at languages (poor memory and study habits I guess), but I have studied linguistics at roughly the minor level back when I was briefly in an ESL MA program. So I think I got this...and may build my own stuff or become a devrel one day.

She has a good point. And it’s along the lines of why I insist on building a user-friendly website with highly specific messaging and web pages before I tackle any other growth channel.

Quick reminder to all my cyber marketing friends: niche content gets the job done.

I was reminded of this when I was checking on a VERY niche page I had made for a client.

Search console only showed 4 clicks over a 90 day period.

I was crushed.

But GA4 showed that 1 of those 4 people had converted.

25% conversion rate isn’t half bad.

And honestly? I don’t know if we would’ve gotten the conversion off of a more general page.

Maybe this has nothing to do with my job search and maybe it has everything to do with my job search. I just think we’re at a place now where everything is connected and we can no longer sweep things under the rug in an effort to be polite. It’s better to be kind, and have an actual impact than just being nice. 

If you want me to relate this to work, ok. 

Probably the best manager I’ve ever had is not someone I’d describe as nice in a classical sense. But he is kind.

He’s very terse, doesn’t reveal personal details, and seems reluctant to discuss anything that’s not the business at hand. He keeps a professional distance because he’s learned he has to in order to be able to hire and fire people when needed. 

But he’s also compassionate, seems interested in growing people the best he can, gives 💯 trust from the beginning (which you can lose), pushes people probably a little harder than makes sense with his resources (and because he’s kind, his team will put up with it), offers a lot of clarity and tradeoffs, AND will on occasion give a small piece of advice or analogy with a lesson when and where it’s needed and will actually help the person. On the latter: he doesn’t point out every flaw, bad idea, or things he’d do differently — but he does help when he needs something specific and when he realizes he has a piece of information that the person needs and can reach the person in a way that doesn’t feel like an attack and won’t cause a defensive reaction (for the most part). This very well may include a little tough love, but it also includes an awareness of the systems the person is working with and against.

I think we’re at a place now where managers aren’t supposed to be our therapists, and therapists aren’t supposed to change our belief systems, but both need to address how our background and what we see around us everyday affects our work and our lives — and we can’t just sweep it all under the rug while speaking in coded, polite speech. 

Maybe I’m saying this because it’s really hard for me to live in California and to have a lot of interviews with people in Silicon Valley when I’m used to really direct, say whatever you want Israelis and New Yorkers. But it’s also because I grew up in a way where I had my voice silenced, I recently passed the twenty year anniversary of cutting the silencers  completely out of my life, and I don’t want to go backwards. 

But I do want to chat, get to know people for who they are, and work with good people who want to work with me as a whole person to do good work. :)

Mental health is political. We have research that shows funding social services and healthcare lowers crime - why are we spending our tax dollars on violence and intimidation?

Can a political activist be a good therapist, or are they inherently harming their clients with their bias?

That's been a pretty common question on LinkedIn recently, but I think the question itself is flawed.

After all, isn't total commitment to political neutrality actually its own political stance?

When a therapist refuses to acknowledge the way systemic issues impact individuals, isn't that harming clients too?

If an immigrant client tells their therapist they're afraid to leave the house because of ICE activity, which response does more harm?

1- Acknowledging that ICE has been known to pick up people with zero criminal record, and that yes, this must be very frightening for the client, then assisting them in looking for mutual aid, or
2- Saying ICE is just doing their jobs, and focusing on what the client should do individually to work through their fear?

If a heterosexual couple presents with a severe imbalance in time spent on childcare and household chores, which response does more harm?

1- Validating that the man likely grew up with the expectation that a job and a wife was enough, and that he may not have learned to do chores growing up... but pointing out that a relationship can never truly be emotionally intimate if one partner prioritizes their own rest while the other one feels exploited, or
2- Treating this as a unique situation between two individuals and asking the wife to do half the work of "conflict resolution" by telling her to ask him nicely and make chore charts?

If a male client is deeply involved in the manosphere and makes statements indicating he sees women as subhuman, which response does more harm?

1- Providing psychoeducation on the manosphere, and how it can only exist by exploiting male loneliness with suggestions that further isolate them from the opposite sex (I've never seen a success story about a healthy relationship in there), or
2- Using CBT to challenge individual statements he makes, only for him to go back and spend several hours on the forums in between therapy sessions?

"Political neutrality" itself is a myth - it means maintaining the existing status quo, and refusing to acknowledge that people are being harmed by systems.

Blind allegiance to the idea of "political neutrality" is harmful to clients.
