When I was 18, I left the safety blanket of my very Northern English upbringing behind and spent six eye opening months backpacking through the wilds of South America- in a time before social media (bar myspace) was really even a thing.

Throughout this life changing adventure I questioned what I was doing approximately 5,000 times. Dealing with sickness thousands of miles from home, abstract  loneliness, language barriers and unstable political regions provided a constant challenge, though I never gave in.  I’m that person. Once I am dedicated to do something, it will happen.

That perseverance and hunger for new experiences has since driven me to uproot and settle in Melbourne, Australia and to carve out a career in the Startup ecosystem, supporting the innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow that are changing our world as we know it.

I'm a partnerships guru, a mentor, a connector, a hype man for those that I believe in, a global citizen, a budding Angel Investor and a champion for the underrepresented and underprivileged. 
But most importantly, I'm still that 18 year old me, with a lust for life and an obsession for innovation, experience and adventure! 

During my line of work I get to impart this kind of enthusiasm onto other people and for me that is the best adventure I could have asked for. If you want to be a part of my journey then just ask me for a coffee, mine's a long black!

This is what #entrepreneurship looks like 

❌ Clocking off when the clock hits 5pm 
✅ Being available whenever wherever it's needed 

❌ Work/life being separate - living in the black and white
✅ Work/life being intertwined - thriving in the grey

❌ Being defined by what you doing
✅ Being defined by why you do it

It's definitely not easy 

Though nothing worth doing ever is

So remember to approach everyday with a smile 😁

and take a moment to "look out of the window' and see how far you've come and not just where you're going

I just survived 15 days living on a train with 600 Indian entrepreneurs 

and it was easily one of the most challenging experiences of my life

On Friday I wrapped up my time on the Jagriti Yatra 

The world's longest #entrepreneurship train journey 🚂

Spanning 8000km and10 Indian states

With pitch competitions, visits to some of India's finest business role models and 24/7 networking

So, what did I learn?

➡️ That #Innovation is at the core or every Indian

The spirit and skills to be an entrepreneur runs deep through the country and it's people and their motivation to succeed is unmatched.

➡️ That the only way to understand a people's business culture is to experience it first hand.

To see how they think, work and live. This was my biggest outcome from my Yatra, a full cultural immersion.

➡️ That Indians will dance at every opportunity that they find! 🤣

➡️ And that there's still plenty of work to be done to connect the Indian #Startup with Australia

Excited to take these learnings with me as I continue to work on building Australia-India relations 🇮🇳🇦🇺

and to sleep in a bed that doesn't shake for the foreseeable future 🙌

I just spent the most amazing day in Amritsar, Punjab and it's all thanks to Flix 🙏 

13 year old Dickie filled with wanderlust read an article about the city's majestic Golden Temple and had dreamt of seeing it in real life ever since

and thanks to partnering with global mobility provider FlixBus it's now a reality (pic to prove it) 📸 

Amritsar definitely lived up to the Hype and so did FlixBus, who I'm excited to be partnering with as they launch in my home country of Australia this month!

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐥𝐢𝐱𝐁𝐮𝐬?

➡️ It's a Global brand - I travelled across Southern Europe & the Balkans in 2023 and it was a lifesaver getting around! the region!

➡️ It's way more sustainable than flying - as someone that travels often from Melbourne to Sydney for work, I'm so happy there's a new option in the market!

As you all know I'm a huge advocate for how travel can change your life

Sitting in the Gurdwara in Amritsar, watching the sun set on this beautiful spiritual place certainly changed mine

3 things I've learnt about Indian #entrepreneurs after living on a train with 600 of them for 7 days

Today is day 7 of the Jagriti Yatra

An 8000km, 15 day journey across India 🇮🇳

In between countless hours spent Bollywood dances, queueing for cold bucket baths & eating regional snacks 

I've been learning about things that are at the heart of Indian #Innovation. Here's 3 observations:

1️⃣ The concept of Jugaad

Which simply means Innovation through resourceful thinking and making what you have work.

Trust me on a journey like this I've seen this in action sooo many times! 

2️⃣ Philanthropy at the heart of #Startups

The Indian philosophy is of a collective society and this shines through in their Innovators.

With impact and charity at the heart of their ventures and ideas.

3️⃣ National/Regional pride 

My fellow travellers are so passionate about making their country and the cities/villages/regions they hail from better.

It's a beautiful thing to watch and fills me with confidence that India will be in good hands as it ages.

The first 7 days of this Yatra (journey) have been some of the most amazing I've experienced on my travels

With 8 still to go and many more stories/insights still to come

3 things I learnt at FB Ventures first ever event...and I wasn't ever there 🥸 

The LaunchVic  backed Fund of Funds hosted "Cornerstones & Catalysts" last night an event talking about the future of the Capital ecosystem in Australia

Not to miss out while I'm in India

I sent my infinitely smarter better half Puja Ganguli to get the lowdown, here were the three key takeaways:

1️⃣ 𝐀 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 #𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐬

How do we solve the problem that women #Founders receive less than 2% of the funding?

By getting more women investors in the market to back them!

 2️⃣ 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦

We need to be backing companies and getting them to an exit (IPO or M & A) faster. So that money can flood back into the ecosystem through Investors and Exited Founders/team.

3️⃣ 𝐖𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥.

Raising overseas often leads to establishing and building teams overseas, which means the Australian Startup economy looses out.

We need to get to a point that when Startups go overseas it is to expand not because they don't have capital

Super excited to see the team at FB ventures launch their Fund of Funds, open to all investors

and to see how they're going some way to solving the above 3 problems by democratising capital

Day one on the world's longest entrepreneur train

The Jagriti Yatra 🚂🇮🇳

ICYMI I'm travelling 8000km, over 15 days with 525 entrepreneurs in search of Middle India and the spirit of #Innovation

Day 1 in Bombay was all about setting the scene:

⭐ With inspirational talks from former Yatris and role models

⭐ Folk performances showcasing the diversity of India which is core to the Yatra

⭐ and hundreds of conversations to get to know my fellow Yatris

How's the Josh (the energy) after day 1?

High sir! Of course

Now on to our new home on the train!!

Day 5 living on an Indian train and I'm clearly loving it still! 🇮🇳🚂

In spite of the 5 hours sleep and cold bucket showers to start the day 🤣

Though while I'm away I'm sad to be missing a event about one of my other favourite things:

"Having money's not everything, but not having it is" 💰 

Love him or loath him, I've always related to this Kanye West lyric

As someone that grew up on the poverty line without money and now has financial comfort and doesn't chase it beyond what I need to survive

Though I do understand it plays a huge role in my #Startup ecosystem, where funding is ultimately the lifeblood 

I remember the good old days of 2021/22 where venture capital was like candy and the funding winter that followed

It feels like we're coming to the end of that epoch, but what's next?

21/22 The post covid-venture boom 
23/24 Funding frosting over
24/25 ?

I think it's the era of alternative sources of funding

This is the evolution of Australia's #Innovation ecosystem

Where #Founders have a plethora of funding options, depending on what's the best fit for them, let's call it: Funding Market Fit

Trademarking that btw 🤣 

One thing that I think is critical to this working is how we bring in the ecosystem builders and enable them to also invest in Founders

It's why I'm excited about FB Ventures, Australia's First Venture Capital Fund of Funds that's open to all investors 1️⃣

Pitch competition in an Indian village?! 

Definitely a new one for me on the #Innovation bucket list 🙏

Over the last 3 years I've MC'd, judged or attended over 100 pitch competitions

though none with occasional blackouts and goats scurrying past the stage 🐐 

Last night I watched 9 pitches under the night sky in Barpar, Uttar Pradesh

at the Jagriti Enterprise Centre - Purvanchal 

From young Indians looking to solve problems in Middle India

Particularly in the village and surrounding region of Deoria we were spending the night in

Including mentoring one team solving a problem for the sports & arts sector

So great to see #entrepreneurship being empowered outside of Metro areas for once

and very grateful to be spending my time here

P.s. I named this Cow Susan after the owner told me she had no name

Pps I tried calling it Dickie, though it's (obviously) a sow and that's stupid 😂

I've been growing a Mo in support of Men's health this month!

and it turns out I couldn't have picked a better place to do it than India 🇮🇳 

Moustache's are all the rage here and according to several (questionable) sources, I look better with one 🤣 

Though that's not why I have a caterpillar for an upper lip

I'm actually joining millions of people around the world who are growing Mo's this month to raise awareness for men's health issues

Such as prostate and testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention

I've been a huge advocate on here for men's mental health, sharing my own stories of struggles with burnout, imposter syndrome and childhood trauma

If you're seeing this Mo today and are feeling blue, then take it as a gesture that I'm here for you

60 men an hour take their life across the world, let's work together to change that

The Indian state of Kerala was once known as the Queen of Arabia for its spice trade 🌶️

now it's becoming the Queen of #Startups

After being voted the top #Innovation ecosystem in the country for the last 3 years!

I just spent 24 hours here as part of the Jagriti Yatra and here's 3 reasons why I think that is:

1️⃣ The State is investing heavily providing resources like the Kerala Startup Mission & capital 150 crore (2.5b) to help to seed and grow 💰

2️⃣ It's got what I call the 'selfdom effect'. People are proud to be from the region and want to be evangelists for it on a national and global stage 🙌

3️⃣ It's small enough that it can give #Founders that depth of connection and community support that they need at the early-stage

Along with the beautiful coconut tree lined landscape and spectacular local arts and culture it's a magical place

and one that you might see producing Unicorns over spices in the near future 🦄

I'm heading to Bangalore next week! 

and I'm looking to connect with people interested in connecting APAC #Innovation ecosystems

Despite having travelled extensively across India, this is actually my first time in

India's Silicon Valley 🤖
