I was once observing a leadership meeting.

Everyone was fighting to speak first.
Everyone… except one person.

He listened.
Took notes.
Watched the room.

When the discussion got messy, he gently said:

“Can I summarise what I’m hearing and offer a way forward?”

Silence.

In 60 seconds, he brought structure, calm, and a clear decision.

After the meeting, I asked him, “Is this your strategy?”

He smiled:

“I don’t try to be the first to speak.
I try to be the one people remember.”

So I always recommend my clients to use the Last in the Room framework

1. 	Observe first – understand the emotions, not just the words
2. 	Wait for the chaos – let everyone empty their mind
3. 	Then speak with structure – “Here’s what I’m hearing, here’s what I suggest”

Influence isn’t volume.
It’s timing + clarity.

Don’t rush to contribute noise.
Wait to deliver signal.

A client once told me,

“I’ve been avoiding a feedback conversation for 3 months.”

“Forget the full conversation. What’s one line you absolutely need to say?”

He thought for a minute and replied:

So I realised that the The One-Line Rule framework works brilliantly.

Before any difficult conversation, ask:

“If I could only say one sentence, what would it be?”

That sentence becomes your anchor.

·   	It guides your tone
·   	It keeps you from drifting into blame or drama

Clarity reduces fear.
Most people don’t avoid conversations.
They avoid the confusion inside them.

Find your one line.
The rest will follow.
