Last week Starbucks told corporate employees to return to the office or risk getting fired.

This 3-day in-office policy will start being enforced on January 1st, 2025.

Starbucks is giving corporate employees two options next year: get back to the office or find a new job.

Just last month their new CEO told employees to work from wherever they needed to, although he said that should usually be the office.

Today the CEO still lives in California and commutes to the Seattle HQ via the corporate jet.

Many employees are very upset about having to return to the office 3 days per week.

Especially because they believe the CEO is getting special treatment.

Should CEOs be allowed to play by a different set of rules than everyone else?

Exactly two years ago I was laid off from Meta / Facebook along with 10,999 others.

These were some incredibly brilliant people.

And I consider many of them to be life-long friends.

People have stayed at some of these tech companies for 15+ years.

Yet the reality is that your job could be here today and gone tomorrow.

My best advice is to always have a backup plan—always have a plan B.

And within 11 months of leaving, I tripled my old salary.

Everyone deserves to rest & relax on their weekends.

In Australia, workers can now legally ignore messages from their boss outside working hours.

This new law is being called the "right to disconnect"

And companies can even be fined for violating this law.

As you would expect—many employers dislike this new rule.

Kevin O'Leary says he would just fire employees who go silent mode on him.

My personal take:

If it's not life or death, your company shouldn't be messaging you on the weekends.

If your boss is messaging you this weekend—maybe it's time to find a new boss!

I don’t understand employers that don’t allow WFH.

WFH doesn’t just mean work from home.

WFH also means work, family, health.

In 2020, Facebook / Meta went full-time remote like everyone else.

But as things started to return to normal, they gave employees a CHOICE—either return to the office or go full-time remote.

I CHOSE to be a full-time remote employee.

Let me explain why I did:

Work - I thrived in a remote setting and produced my best work ever. That landed me a promotion and the best performance review I’ve ever gotten.

Family - From a week in the Barbados with my dad, to a birthday trip to Europe with my mom. I’ve never been able to spend so much time with my family.

Health - the FB15 turned into the FB50. When I was going into the office every day, I gained 50lbs. But when we went remote I lost 70lbs. I now try to go on daily walks and my health has greatly improved.

I get it, not everyone can be WFH (nor wants to be).

But for those that can do their jobs remotely—give them CHOICE.

WFH = Work. Family. Health.

The greatest companies in the world trust their employees to get the job done.

They don't micromanage them and stop personal (and professional) growth.

We need more companies who:

- show care
- trust employees
- encourage time off
- support personal growth
- appreciates different opinions

These are the companies that will still be around in 20, 30 and 50 years from now.

Nobody wants to work in a place where they don't feel appreciated.

Trust me on this one!

I once had a manager that only had a 13% approval rating.

One of the lowest performance ratings across the entire company.

Yet the company kept them on & even gave them a promotion.

Every single person on that team left in the next 6 months.

People joined the team because it was a great company.

But they wanted to quit because of a bad boss.

Don’t be the reason someone has to quit!

The CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) said that employees not happy with the return to office mandate can leave.

In a company all-hands last week he told his staff:

“If there are people who just don’t work well in that environment and don’t want to, that’s OK, there are other companies around."

But thousands of Amazon employees have argued that they’re just as productive working from home or in a hybrid work environment.

What a way to treat people who have dedicated their professional lives to your company.

So in other words:

- if you don't want to live near their HQ
- if you can't spend hours commuting
- if you find in-office less productive
- if you want to more family time
- if you wish to work remotely

Then he's saying you should leave the company.

Yes, employers can mandate that you return to office.

But the best employees will always have options for employers.

My advice: find a company where you are truly valued & appreciated!

In 2023 my one-person business surpassed the income I made at my old 9-5 big tech job.

I’m referring to the LinkedIn “side-hustle” I do outside of building a startup with my dad.

For the last couple years I’ve worked remotely (mostly from Texas).

But I’ve also been fortunate enough to travel the world while working.

This year alone I’ve been to Barbados 3 times already and have 2 more trips to Belize.

While I’m traveling, it gets extremely challenging to run a business all by myself.

As founders we always want to be everywhere & do everything on our own.

But I’ve learned that getting help is fundamental for long term success.

If I ever needed help, I’d use a platform like Fiverr to:

- make LinkedIn carousels
- create a super fast website
- develop a custom media kit
- help me book calls with brands

Look, I’ll be transparent and say this is an #ad but that doesn’t mean you should scroll away.

If there’s one thing big tech has taught me, it’s that you should ALWAYS have a plan B.

Yesterday Attention.com announced a huge $14 million series A round of funding.

Talk about a company that’s actually doing super cool things with AI.

Over my sales career, I’ve helped companies bring in over $550 million in revenue, and I wish this existed back in 2017.

Jeff Bezos just got himself into some hot water last week.

He owns The Washington Post newspaper and told the editorial board to not endorse any political candidate.

An editorial board is supposed to be an independent body, with their own opinions.

But what are you supposed to do when the owner of the company makes demands?

Following this move, several editorial board members have resigned from the paper.

Then yesterday we learned that over 200,000 paid subscribers have canceled.

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon and owns his space company, Blue Origin.

Blue Origin has billion-dollar contracts with NASA (the federal government)

The U.S. federal government gives billion-dollar contracts to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and ultimately to Blue Origin.

Bezos probably doesn't care about 200K subscribers leaving—but he definitely  cares about his billion-dollar government contracts.

Should tech billionaires have the power to influence media like this?

In my tech career, I’ve done over $550 million in sales for different companies.

I’ve also coached dozens of new hires on how to educate clients and win deals.

But most of my days are usually spent in meetings or sending emails.
