The future of work is all about unleashing the power of teams. Organisations are being more urgent as they come up against competition, a faster innovation cycle and increasing needs of customers. Teams are solving more complex problems, whilst being increasingly diverse in their make-up, and often globally distributed.

It would be easy to jump on the bandwagon and mock Deloitte for this, but that would be unfair and miss the point. This could have been any big 4 or consulting company.

The real take away for me is this, and it’s to the execs of large businesses:

- you’ve paid money to analogue firms for digital transformation 
- you handed over bucket loads of cash for PowerPoint slides from companies selling agile transformation, who’d never practiced agility.

But please, oh please, for the love of whichever god/spirit you believe in, please….if you’ve going to hand over $40m for an “AI transformation”, please ask them to show you how THEY have transformed THEMSELVES first. 

Lived experience and first hand practical knowledge here, trumps maturity models, white papers and best practice, any day of the week!

This probably isn't news to any senior leader in an enterprise right now...you feel like you're spending money on AI, your employee engagement survey results claim a productivity improvement, but you don't feel like you're seeing the net benefit? You're not hallucinating. 

You're part of the 96% of companies who are not YET feeling the ROI on your AI spend.

The answer? It's not to spend more on AI!!

Like all technologies before it, AI doesn't operate alone. It should work in harmony with your human systems and your company O/S, being your leadership, culture, and ways of working.

AI Paradox

Work shouldn’t be this fun! I laughed, learned and listened a helluva lot last week…why? Three inspirational experienced legends on stage sharing their pearls of wisdom.

Too much to share, but the standouts were:

- Christine Gadsby from BlackBerry sharing the signal we should all be looking out for; the trust, relationships and security of our partners in business. How secure is your network of partners or vendors? I also loved how she shared how BlackBerry has evolved through “less egos and more sharing of experiments”
-  the man, myth and legend that is James Keyes of Blockbuster and 7-Eleven fame, sharing the difference between perception and perspective. We lean on perception too much and we need to take a step back and get more perspective!
- and the effervescent Jane Huxley sharing her experience leading some amazing brands with “your strategy won’t survive its first battle with your competition so be prepared to listen and learn FAST!”

I think KPIs have a role, but they very rarely measure impact. They’re also all about you, and little to do with the people you’re trying to affect.

How to replace "how was your day?" with 4 layers of more insightful questions, and a surprise one at the end.

I learn a HUGE amount every time I listen to the brilliant Milo-Arne Wilkinson, a highly decorated (7 degrees!) behavioural scientist and criminal profiler. 

What's your go to question to cut through the theatre and into the real conversation?

Whilst 90% of narrative is chasing elusive “productivity” gains, when do we feel the right time is to have the society conversation? Or the business conversation around ‘real total cost’?

What’s the real total cost of efficiencies that push people out of meaningful employment?

On:
- their purpose, mental health and well being 
- family unit, cost of living and serviceability of life
- spending, taxes and economic contribution (does the AI that replaces people, pay tax?)
- education and funding learning

I was part of the team that proved AI works. That’s why Apple let us go.


I spent over a year training AI to do my job. On June 14, 2024, Apple let me go along with nearly half my radio team. The same AI we trained was now doing the work.

At first, leadership framed it as a “tool” to make our lives easier. They told us, “This will help you save time, focus on the creative, and let the system handle the repetitive tasks.” That sounded good on paper. But for many of us, the warning signs were clear.

We pushed back. We said, “This doesn’t feel right. This system isn’t here to help us, it’s here to learn from us.” The resistance was strong enough that the company pulled the system for a few months.

Then it came back. Version 2.0. Stronger. Faster. Cleaner. They told us again, “This is only here to support you.” But this time, it worked better. We had no choice but to use it. Every day we were training it, fixing its mistakes, and showing it how to handle both the simple tasks and the more complex ones.

Over time, the errors shrank. The machine got sharper. And six months later, the truth was impossible to ignore. The AI did the job well enough to replace us.

Here’s my advice if you’re starting to see the same signs in your company:

🚩If 30% to 40% of your work is now routed through AI, pay attention.
🚩If management tracks how much you “interact” with AI, that’s another warning.
🚩Each week you’re training the system, you’re also training your replacement.

If they’re pushing you to use AI for your work, understand this: you’re already putting the noose around your neck. You’re only waiting for them to kick the stool out from under your feet.

I’m not sharing this to scare you, but to prepare you. I wish someone had told me earlier.

In my next post, I’ll share what I’ve seen in the music industry since, why labels are shifting their focus, and why I’ve decided to move into K-Pop.

For anyone heading to SXSW Sydney this week, I’d 100% recommend going listening to David Hyman for his no BS approach to leadership, sustainable growth, building engaged teams, and embracing technology. He’s doing it for real, so there’s no theory involved! Just practice ;-)
