I'm currently working full time as a web developer with Ruby on Rails.  In the past we've built dynamic web sites using Perl and some PHP; but since 2005 we've been working exclusively with Ruby.  We provide full internet hosting for our clients including web application hosting with Apache and also mail hosting with Postfix.  In addition to application development I'm also responsible for system administration of our hosting environment.

I was part of a growing department dedicated to Online Systems.  I was the scrum master for the e-commerce team.  We provided an XML-RPC service for the rest of online systems to use that takes orders, validates them, and ultimately communicates them to our Oracle finance application.  Since taking responsibility as scrum master, my team has had an 84% success ratio of meeting our deadlines for new development while simultaneously providing operational support.  We've actually reduced code size while increasing functionality and increasing test coverage.  I've conducted many code reviews and taught a class on test driven development.  All of this work was done using scrum project management and developed in Ruby on Rails.

I telecommute about 75% for this job.  One week a month I travel to the company's headquarters in Harrisonburg, VA and the other weeks I work from home.

I was a contractor doing staff augmentation for the Kroger Company. I'm working in Kroger's Pharmacy group helping them to secure their systems and setup audit trails to satisfy both HIPAA and Sarbanes/Oxley.

Software Engineer

I did systems level software development on a medical grade computer based on Linux. The system was used in "image guided surgeory". I wrote a device driver for a proprietary mass storage device to run under Linux. I also organized the source code repository and did significant work on the software build system. I also setup a system for building a custom distribution of Linux from source code.

Seapine Software

At the time, Seapine's only product was TestTrack.  This is a client/server application that ran on MS-Windows for bug/issue tracking.  I was the primary programmer involved in porting the server portion over to Linux.  I also did some work enhancing their web client.

I was an independant web developer for a number of years before I merged with Sus4.net.  I did a couple of e-commerce sites using Perl and the Interchange package.  I also did quite a bit of pro-bono work on the GNU/Linux operating system.

I was a consultant performing staff augmentation duties for two different companies.  My first assignment was with the Kroger company.  I did maintenance and enhancements on their warehouse/distribution center management software.  This was all written in C running against an Informix SQL database on AIX.  

My second assignment was with Reynolds & Reynolds (now the Relizon Company) also with their warehouse management software.  I wrote a utility to assist in the collection and data-warehousing of information to make centralized reports and centralized information sharing.  This was in C against an Ingres SQL database on Solaris.

I worked on a team evaluating the migration for various in-house projects to Baan Enterprise Routing System.  Most of my work related to the shop floor control of a paper mill.  I also worked on a statistical process control system for managing the quality of paper as it came off the machine.  I did field installations, upgrades, and on-site training for mill workers with the software.  I was also involved in re-architecting the replacement SPC system.

I was part of a team that did site surveys of US Air Force Base Weather Stations to determine their communications capabilities.  We wrote a report detailing the full data communication capabilities of the Air Force Weather networks.  We were also involved in designing the replacement network.

Communications Engineer

As COO at Launch Scout, I work as a bridge between Sales and Delivery helping our clients to have a great experience with a great team. This includes largely driving the sales cycle, handling account management, and managing project leads. I also manage our schedule and do financial forecasting based on sold work and the sales pipeline.

I have over 15 years experience as a full-stack developer working in Ruby, Elixir, and more JavaScript than I’d care to admit. I've mentored many young developers and helped them to take on leadership roles within the company. I’ve spoken at several conferences over the years including QCMerge, CodeMash, Wicket Good Ruby, Burlington Ruby Conference, Cincinnati Day of Agile and many others.
