SciChart Ltd (formerly ABT Software Services Ltd) was incorporated in 2010 out of a desire to provide front-office WPF / C# Consultancy to Tier-1 Investment Banks, Proprietary Trading Firms and Scientific Companies. 

Over time this role has evolved and I am now currently working full time as the Tech-Lead and Managing Director of SciChart® - High Performance Real-time charts (www.scichart.com), a high-speed charting component tailored for financial and scientific applications.

Front Office Equity Derivatives Software Consultant

Merrill Lynch

Highly desk-facing role in a team of 10, upgrading and supporting the in-house Commodities Trading Platform. The role involved implementing exchange connectivity between CTP and Central/Eastern European power grids and exchanges. Physical power futures/forwards require daily notification of net MW/h flow positions to participating power grids (in addition to settlement). CTP needed to be extended to allow notification to new grids using ESS format (Xml messages). This position involved working on the full end to end system (C# client, server, Tibco middleware, SQL Server database), including the implementation and unit testing of new notification C# / SQL code as well as liaising with business users, power grids & exchanges in order to deliver critical functionality to the desk.

RBS Global Banking & Markets

Worked on a Greenfield WPF project at RBS in a team of 12, developing a high-profile front-office Risk and PnL reporting system for the Interest Rate options, hybrids and exotics business. This role combines solid WPF/.NET experience with a good understanding and knowledge of financial products. I worked closely with business analysts and traders to develop UI screens and functionality in WPF and .NET 4.0 as part of this robust and extendable risk & PnL system. 
RBS utilised a fully agile development process including continuous build and integration, daily scrums, physical Jira “wall” and 2-3 week delivery cycles. Test driven development was encouraged and the system had over
3,000 unit, integration and automation tests.

Shimadzu Research Laboratory (Europe)

Worked as a software engineer responsible for the extensive refactoring of Ion-Optics simulation software at Shimadzu Research Lab. This work is leveraged existing skills in scientific software, C# .NET as well as new skills in MS Prism, parallel processing, high performance computing and refactoring/maintenance of legacy code.

Consultancy work for Shimadzu is on-going as they seek to deliver their simulation software to researchers.

Simulation Software Specialist

Tessella

Worked in a team of three on a £200k contract to develop visualisation software for a FTSE100 listed oil and gas company. The system is an optimised visualisation and simulation package, capable of viewing 3D models of oil rigs containing hundreds of thousands of objects and performing simulations giving the optimum position of fire and gas detectors. 

My responsibilities on this project include the design and implementation of the 3D rendering software, which is written in C++, C++/CLI and OpenSceneGraph. In addition I have had a significant input into the architecture of the system and provided consultation on the calculation method for fire detection.

3D Graphics and Visualisation for a FTSE100 Oil&Gas company

Worked in a team of three to implement a distributed image capture and processing system for a major consumer goods company. My responsibilities are been to develop an oracle-based data access layer, remoting and file transfer services using WCF and user interface components in WPF.

WPF, WCF Developer for a leading consumer goods company

Responsible for the architectural design and implementation of a generic, re-usable questionnaire and report writing engine as well as it's use in a specific application for a Medical Legal Services company. During this period I was the lead developer responsible for a team of three. As well as being responsible for the high-level design of the system, I undertook to coach and mentor less experienced members of staff on the team, one of which has subsequently taken over the support phase. 

This project was an immense success, leading to profit increases of 150% from cost savings made, despite the recession with largely flat revenues.

Architect/Lead Developer for Premex Legal Services

Worked on an internal project to update the Requisition System used in Tessella to go from a paper based system to an entirely web-based system. Working in a small team of 3, this project involves migrating a relational database from SQL Server 2005 to Oracle 10g and web front-end in ASP.NET.

ASP.NET, Oracle Developer for Tessella PLC

£65K contract to develop an image processing application for a major consumer products corporation. The customer required images to be captured during panelling studies to be subjected to automated image processing to extract data as well as reviewed by a human user to “clean” or improve the quality of results. Images as well as results for the study are stored in a file-persisted dataset. 

This application required parts of an existing application to be ported from Visual Basic 6 to C# .NET as well as a significant amount of image processing in C++ and advanced user-interface design using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). I was the sole developer on this project and was responsible for the majority of the design, which utilises an N-Tier architecture, Model-View-Controller pattern and with key components unit tested using NUnit. The final application comprised 100,000 lines of code and the high-performance, visually impressive user interface delighted the customer.

WPF Image Processing System for a leading consumer goods company

During this period I was involved on two projects for the same customer developing software to control instrumentation hardware as well as a Windows Workflow based Common Automation Platform, which was used as a component in both projects.

The Common Automation Platform consisted of a graphical experiment designer; allowing a non-technical user to configure an experiment using a visual “flow-chart” style designer, and a set of experiment execution libraries, which allowed previously designed experiments to be executed on the target system, while performing operations such as data processing and experimental result collection.

Both projects require knowledge of data acquisition, instrumentation hardware control and image processing. One project utilised a Kawasaki robot arm, which processes several experimental batches simultaneously using a scheduling algorithm built into the automation platform.

Windows Workflow and Instrumentation Control for a leading consumer goods company

I worked for two months extending an application written to facilitate PDA-based panelling for an existing Tessella customer. The panelling application was designed to present longevity questionnaires to users of domestic products, store results and later upload to central database for analysis. During this work, I was responsible for the development of a desktop designer application, to allow non-technical users to generate XML questionnaire files, which were later loaded onto the PDA. I also updated the existing PDA software to add additional functions, such as the capability to store recorded voice as a question answer.

Compact .NET Framework Developer for a leading consumer goods company

University of Manchester

During my PhD at the University of Manchester (formerly UMIST), I developed a 3D acoustic positioning system to track miniature data-loggers inside industrial process vessels. 

The solution utilised an inverted-GPS approach, where the times of flight of an acoustic waveform transmitted by the data-logger to four sensors mounted on the vessel wall were measured and used to trilaterate transmitter position. 

In order to mitigate the problems of acoustic reverberations, broadband interference and noise inside the process vessel, the system utilised spread spectrum communications techniques, commonly used in the wireless arena (such as WLAN, GSM mobiles) and applied them to an acoustic carrier.

This work involved the implementation of a custom hardware / software test-bed, including the design of a programmable signal generator and bespoke signal conditioning hardware. A C# application on the PC provided a graphical user interface, control over the external hardware, automation of experiments, digital signal processing of acquired signals and 3D visualisation of positional data in real-time. 

Throughout my PhD work, I was also involved in several side-projects for the University, including mentoring of Masters degree project teams, teaching undergraduates embedded systems in laboratory sessions, consulting on the design and integration of interdisciplinary instrumentation systems and the development of an optimised signal processing library to perform certain Fourier-based operations including FFT, convolution, correlation and digital filter coefficient generation.

Postgraduate Researcher

During the summer of 2003 I completed a four-month contract with UMIST, department of Industrial Process Tomography, in collaboration with Syngenta PLC. I was responsible for the design of a prototype Low-Cost Impedance Tomography system enabling computerised images to be produced of the inside of industrial process vessels from a network of measured electrical impedances. This work involved the design and implementation of instrumentation hardware, control software in Visual basic, signal processing in C and integration to existing image reconstruction algorithms written in Matlab. 

Syngenta required a test-bed system to showcase the culmination in years of research in image reconstruction. The system needed to be low-cost (replace an existing system costing £8000 for under £1000), highly flexible in operation and very accurate. The outcome of the contract was a great success, with further development of the system to MKII resulting in commercialisation of the instrument.
