Why do some dental practices significantly outperform others financially?

It’s rarely about clinical skill alone. Practices that consistently generate strong revenue tend to be led by owners who approach dentistry as both a healthcare profession and a business.

Sustainable growth often comes down to a few key areas:

Effective delegation is a core leadership skill—and one that many high-performing professionals find challenging. Today’s prompt is simple: identify one recurring task you manage but don’t enjoy, and explore whether it can be delegated to someone whose strengths align with it.

Delegation isn’t about releasing control; it’s about creating the conditions for your team to grow while allowing you to focus on higher-value work. When we let go of tasks that don’t require our expertise, we increase efficiency, develop others, and create more space for strategic thinking.

What’s one task you can delegate this week to elevate both your productivity and your team’s potential?

Work–life balance isn’t something an employer can offer as a benefit.

As Matthew Kelly explains:
“Work-life balance is not an entitlement or benefit. Your company cannot give it to you. You have to create it for yourself.”

This means taking ownership of how we manage our time and energy. It requires clear boundaries, thoughtful prioritization, and sometimes the willingness to say no—even to opportunities that are positive or appealing.

Balance will look different in every season of life and career, but it always begins with awareness. When we pay attention to where our energy is going, we can make more intentional choices.

What is one small change you could make this week to better protect your time or energy?

Dentistry and orthodontics can feel lonely sometimes.

We’re making big clinical decisions.
We’re leading teams.
We’re running a business.
And we’re trying to do it all well.

But the truth is: most growth happens faster when we don’t do it alone.

When we share ideas, learn from each other, and ask for help, we get better. Our practices get stronger. Our teams run smoother. Our patients feel the difference.

This is why community matters so much—especially for women in dentistry. Support and connection can change everything.

Who has helped you the most in your career so far?

Do you ever feel like there just isn’t enough time in the day?

Time is one of our most valuable resources, yet it’s often the easiest to waste without realizing it. William Penn said it well: “Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.”

This is a good reminder to pause and reflect on how we’re spending our time—what’s truly moving us forward, and what’s simply filling space. Small, intentional changes in how we plan our days can make a big difference over time.

A lead magnet is a valuable piece of content or an offer that is provided to potential patients in exchange for their contact information, typically their email address.

A great first step is to brainstorm the top 10 pain points your ideal patient has.

Can you solve any of those problems with information alone?

By solving your potential patients problems, concerns or FAQs with information, you are beginning a relationship with them.

Building the know, like, and trust factor is key to attracting new patients to your practice for sustained long-term growth.

The first phone call from a potential new patient is one of the most important moments in the entire patient experience. It sets the tone for trust, connection, and the quality of care they can expect. A few simple practices can make this touchpoint both effective and memorable:

1. Aim to answer every call by the third ring.
Most new patients won’t leave a voicemail—they’ll simply call the next office. Prompt answers communicate reliability and respect for their time.

2. Immediately confirm they’ve reached the right place.
A warm, confident greeting such as, “You’ve called the right office—Dr. Smith is excellent with toothaches and will take great care of you,” helps reduce anxiety and builds instant rapport.

3. Confidently guide them to an appointment.
They reached out because they need support. Lead the conversation, help them feel cared for, and schedule their visit with clarity and ease.

A well-managed new patient call isn’t just administrative—it’s a strategic part of practice growth and patient relationship-building. When your team is attentive, reassuring, and proactive, you create a strong first impression that carries through the entire patient journey.

Feeling stressed? Try starting with your breath.

Deep breathing is a simple, science-backed way to calm the nervous system and reset your focus. Slowing your breath sends a signal to your body that it’s safe to relax, which can reduce stress and improve clarity—often in just a few minutes.

The next time you feel overwhelmed, pause and take a few slow, deep breaths. It’s a small habit, but it can make a meaningful difference in how you show up for the rest of your day.

Creating a memorable new patient experience is one of the most reliable ways to become the “go-to” practice in your community.

Patients don’t just remember the clinical outcome. They remember how your team made them feel—especially at the first visit. That first appointment often determines whether they return, refer friends, and leave a review.

A helpful exercise for your team:

How do we stand out compared to other practices nearby?

Where can we add more value (without adding complexity)?

What can we do to reduce anxiety and build trust quickly?

What would make a patient think, “I’ve never been treated like this before”?

This doesn’t require big spending. It’s usually small, consistent details—communication, clarity, warmth, and follow-through—that create a standout experience.

If you want a growing practice, start by making the first visit genuinely unforgettable.
