I hold a PhD in Computer Science, with over six years of experience in academia and more than eight years in research, with publications in journals with high impact factor. My research expertise focuses on Network Function Virtualization for Cognitive Radio-based IoT Networks to optimize spectrum access. My research interests include the Internet of Things (IoT), Next-Generation Wireless Networks, and Machine Learning.

AI tools today can generate summaries, rewrite paragraphs, and produce pages of content within minutes. But here’s the reality many students overlook:

Highlight the problem your research addresses.

A literature review is not a list of summaries. It is an intellectual map.

Instead of writing:
Article 1 → summary
Article 2 → summary
Article 3 → summary

Try this approach:
- Identify 3–5 major themes emerging from the literature
- Group studies under these themes
- Show how each group progresses the story

Examples of thematic clusters:

Example:

This avoids abrupt jumps and builds a coherent argument.

A theme should have:
- A clear opening that signals what this section covers
- Evidence woven through comparison, contrast, and critique
- A closing sentence that connects back to your main research problem

Your literature review should read like a guided tour, not a document dump.

Struggling to identify a research gap is one of the most common and most stressful challenges students face.

Not because they lack intelligence.

Because the process is rarely taught clearly.

Here is a simple, structured approach I teach my postgraduate researchers:

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟯-𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗨𝗟𝗔 𝗧𝗢 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗚𝗔𝗣 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗠𝗘𝗗

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵
Before you even think about your gap, you need a clean landscape of what already exists.

Use Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science with well-chosen keywords.
Then filter your results: last 5 years, subject category, methodology type.
This narrows noise and helps you see patterns instead of drowning in literature.

Once you collect a manageable set of papers, create a visual map.

A “gap” is not valid until you test it.

Ask yourself:
– Is it acknowledged by multiple authors?
– Does it matter theoretically or practically?
– Is it feasible with my skills, timeline, and data access?
– Does recent literature still leave this space open?

Validation prevents you from selecting a gap that is either outdated, irrelevant, or impossible to investigate.

As AI tools become deeply embedded in academic workflows, one challenge keeps resurfacing: fabricated references. 

Many students, and even experienced researchers, unknowingly rely on citations produced by AI, only to discover later that some of those articles never existed. 

This not only weakens the credibility of their work but can also lead to academic and ethical consequences.

The issue is not with AI being “wrong”; it is with how we use it without verification.

Below is a clear, structured guide to help researchers understand why this happens, how to detect fake citations, and how to avoid them altogether.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗜 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀
AI models predict text based on patterns. When you ask for references, the model often creates:
plausible-sounding article titles
real author names paired with non-existent works
journals that look authentic
publication years within a reasonable range

This is called hallucination, and it can easily mislead an unsuspecting researcher.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆
Never add any AI-generated reference directly into your manuscript. Always follow a proper verification cycle:

1. Cross-check in credible databases
 Use platforms such as:
 → Google Scholar
 → IEEE Xplore
 → PubMed
 → Scopus
 → Web of Science
 → ScienceDirect
 If the article does not appear in at least one major library, treat it as suspicious.

2. Search by title, not just authors
 Sometimes AI mixes authors and titles. Always verify the exact title in quotation marks.

3. Confirm DOI numbers
 Real academic articles always have a valid DOI.
 If the DOI cannot be resolved on doi.org, it is fake.

4. Inspect journal websites
 Visit the actual journal’s archive and check if the publication exists in the stated volume and issue.

5. Be cautious with recent years
Most fake references appear in the last 2–4 years. Cross-verify these with extra care.

4. Use research managers wisely
Tools like Mendeley, Zotero, and EndNote allow you to import references directly from credible databases.

5. Ask AI to format, not fabricate
 Instead of asking:
 “Give me references on machine learning in healthcare.”
 Try:
“Format the following five verified references in APA 7th style.”

𝟯- 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝗣𝗔 (𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻). This is one non-work task crucial for your well-being or home life. (E.g., Go for a Walk).

𝟯- 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆: What is one boundary you need to set today to protect your focus or peace? (E.g., Close email until 1 PM or Do not check work Slack after 6 PM).
