AI writing tools are changing the way we approach academic writing, but let’s be clear: 

Automation doesn’t mean Abdication.

As a research mentor, I often get asked:
"Can I use AI to help write my paper?"
 "Will journals accept it?"
 "Is it ethical?"

Absolutely. But only when used transparently, ethically, and critically.

"Is this plagiarism? But I just changed the words!"
 I’ve heard this countless times from students and it’s a fair question.

Plagiarism isn’t only copy‑paste. 

It’s also how you handle ideas, reused text, figures, data, and even AI. 

Quick takeaways:

1. Ideas can be plagiarized, too. 
Using concepts or methods you saw in a confidential review or grant without credit is plagiarism. 
Treat privileged info as off‑limits. 

2. Text recycling has rules. 
Limited reuse (often in Methods) may be OK only when you cite the earlier paper and your journal permits it. 
Check a text‑recycling policy before you paste.

3. ‘Salami slicing’ counts. 
Republishing the same dataset across multiple near‑duplicate papers, even paraphrased can be flagged as duplicate publication. 
Declare related manuscripts upfront. 

4. Figures & tables need licenses/author permissions, not just citations. 
If you didn’t create it, confirm reuse rights (publisher policy/CC license) and attribute properly. 

5. AI isn’t an author and you must disclose its use. 
State how AI assisted (e.g., language editing, coding help) and take full responsibility for accuracy and originality. 

Document sources, disclose AI, verify rights, and be transparent about overlaps. 

That’s how you protect your credibility and your paper.

How to Choose the Right Research Method?

When I started my PhD, I thought research was all about finding the right answer.

But no one told me the real challenge would be finding the right way to ask the question.

I remember staring at my research proposal thinking:
 "Should I interview people, run surveys, do both? What even is mixed methods?"

So, here’s the version I wish someone gave me back then :

📌 Let’s say you’re studying stress in healthcare workers.

1. If you want to know how they feel, what causes their stress, and how they cope..? 
 You go QUALITATIVE.
 You sit with them, do interviews, maybe a focus group.
 You hear their stories.
 
You're exploring the why and how, not measuring, but understanding.

2. If you want to know how many report high stress, what’s the correlation with working hours, or what percentage improved with intervention...?
 You go QUANTITATIVE.
 You design a survey, analyze the numbers, test a hypothesis.
 You’re looking for patterns, trends, cause-effect relationships.

3. But what if you want to do both?
What if you want to understand how stress shows up AND how common it is...?
You do MIXED METHODS.
 You do interviews and surveys.
 You combine stories with stats.
 🧩 You get a richer picture, not just the forest or the trees, but the entire ecosystem.

📌 How to decide?
✅ Start with your research question.
 → Is it about meaning or measurement? Or both?
✅ Think of what success looks like.
 → Do you want to tell a story? Prove a point? Or build a bridge between both?
✅ Be honest about your resources.
 → Mixed methods sound exciting but take more time, skills, and patience

“Do I Still Need to Cite If I Write in My Own Words?” 

A mentee once asked me:
“If I read a paper, understand it, and then write about it in my own words… do I still need to cite it?”

The short answer: Yes.

The longer answer?
Let me walk you through it — because this is one of the most common (and dangerous) confusions in academic writing.

1. Understanding ≠ Ownership
If you understand a concept and explain it clearly, that's great.
But if the idea originally came from someone else... even if you rewrite it, you must cite the source.

Why? Academic integrity is about tracing the origin of ideas, not just words.

2. Paraphrasing Without Citation = Academic Theft
Paraphrasing means putting someone else's idea in your own words.
But it's still their idea.
 
No citation? That's plagiarism.
✅ Fix: Add a proper in-text citation, even if the sentence sounds like your voice.

3. Academic Writing is a chain of Ideas
You’re not writing in isolation. You’re building on years, sometimes decades of work.

Example: If you write,
“The Conservation of Resources theory explains why individuals experience stress when key assets are threatened…”
 
That’s Hobfoll’s (1989) idea. Cite it.

4. Common Knowledge ≠ Citation-Free Zone (Always)
Yes, you don’t need to cite:
“Water boils at 100°C at sea level.”

But in research, “common knowledge” is tricky.

What’s common in physics isn’t common in media studies.
What’s common in your mind may be new to your reader.

✅ Rule: If in doubt, cite.

5. Cite Ideas, Not Just Direct Quotes

Many students think citations are only for direct quotes (“ ”).

Not true.

In academic writing, we cite the source of ideas, whether it’s quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

6. Citing Shows You’ve Done the Work
 
Far from making you look less original, citations show that:
 ✅ You’ve read widely
 ✅ You’re engaging with the field
 ✅ You understand where your voice fits in
Reviewers love that.

7. But What If I Genuinely Had the Idea Myself?

Great! Then check:
 🔹 Has someone else published it?
 🔹 Is it a well-established idea?

If not and the thought process is truly yours,own it.

If someone else has said it too, cite them and explain how you’re building on it.

8. Use Tools, But Don’t Rely on Them Blindly
AI tools like Paperpal, PaperAim, SciSpace can help paraphrase.

✅ Always trace the original source before using AI-generated summaries.

9. Your Voice = How You Combine Sources, Not Avoid Them

Academic originality is not “I said it first.”
It’s “I connected things in a new way.”

Cite everyone who contributed to your thinking and then show your unique angle.

So yes, even if you write in your own words,you still need to cite.

How to go from reading papers to writing something original? 

Writing about a big topic 
like “Work-Life Balance Challenges among PhD Students” can feel overwhelming.

Where do you even start? 
What do you include? 
How do you go beyond just venting into a paper?

Here’s a method I use with my own PhD mentees: Bloom’s Taxonomy for Critical Thinking.

Let’s walk through it with our PhD-life example: 

1. Remember (Gather basics)
 Start with the what.
 → What is work-life balance?
 → What do previous studies say about PhD student mental health?
 
📌 Example: Collect stats on stress, burnout, and support systems in academia.

2. Understand (Make sense)
 Break it down in your own words.
 → What are the major causes of imbalance in PhD life?
 → How does funding, supervision, or cultural context play a role?
 
📌 Example: Summarize patterns across countries or disciplines.

3. Apply (Use in context)
 Test out a theory.
 → How does Maslow’s hierarchy or the Job Demands-Resources model explain the stress?

 📌 Example: Map how lack of autonomy or time pressure affects motivation.

4. Analyze (Compare & contrast)
 Look for deeper insights.
 → Do full-time and part-time PhD students face different issues?
 → Does having a family change the equation?
 
📌 Example: Compare lived experiences from qualitative studies.

5. Evaluate (Critique)
 Ask the tough questions.
 → Are university wellness policies actually helping?
 → Do existing studies miss out on intersectional factors?

📌 Example: Assess whether gender or race influences access to support.

6. Create (Propose something new)
 Here’s your chance to innovate.
 → What could improve PhD well-being in a sustainable way?
 
📌 Example: Design a flexible support program or peer-led initiative.

Why do some research topics stand out ,while others fall flat?
It all begins with the gap. 

Here are some strategies to help you spot the missing pieces in your field:

1. Start with broad reading — then dig deeper
Begin with literature reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. 
These high-level overviews often flag where the field is weak or inconsistent. 

As you move to individual empirical studies, pay close attention to the Introduction, Limitations, Discussion, and Future Work sections. Many authors explicitly mention what remains unexplored. 

2. Ask questions as you read
Don’t passively absorb. 

Instead, think:
✅ Why did the author choose this method, and what if I tried another?
✅What assumptions underlie their approach?
✅Are there populations, timeframes, or settings they’ve ignored?
✅How confident am I in the generalizability of their conclusions?

This “active reading” mindset surfaces gaps that might not be obvious. 

3. Map the conversation
As you read many papers, chart their topics, methods, populations, results, and limitations (in a spreadsheet, mind map, or matrix). 

Over time, patterns emerge: areas that are well covered, and areas that are rarely touched.

📌 You can also use tools like Litmaps, ResearchRabbit, Liner to visualize connections and spot “disconnected” lines of work.

4. Combine insights from different subfields
Often the most interesting gaps lie between fields.
 
Maybe your area of interest is studied by Field A but not by Field B, even though the connection is plausible. 

Exploring that junction can lead to novel questions. 

5. Use digital tools & indicators
✅ Use keyword searches like "future research," “limitations,” or “research gaps” alongside your domain keywords. 
✅ Look at citation networks (who cites whom) to see clusters and blank spots
✅ Track which papers are highly cited or influential, they often open new lines of inquiry.

6. Validate & prioritize
Once you spot a candidate gap, don’t proceed immediately. 

Ask:
✅ Is this gap relevant (theoretically or practically)?

✅ Does it align with your interests, resources, and timeframe?
