The increasing role of data within businesses means that we can no longer view it as a purely operational pursuit. We need to ensure that we have a balanced approach of operational, educational, and strategic thinking to ensure that any data methodologies can be used by the whole business and do not sit on a virtual shelf gathering virtual dust. Recent developments within the data industry focus upon “ML Ops” which form part of the pinnacle of data within businesses. I believe that because of this many businesses overlook the impact of clear, concise, and understandable analytics that form part of the journey towards advanced technological methodologies. To put it another way, simply replacing the engine of a car with a more powerful one will not immediately make it go faster, in fact without ensuring all the parts are compatible or making the required adjustments this will make the car go slower and, in some cases, may cause the car not to work at all. This is why when approaching the challenge of data within businesses I employ the three pillar approach of operations, education, and strategy to ensure that the tools we build are: fit for purpose, understood by the business, and can influence the thinking of the business. This approach democratises data within businesses and leads to improved effectiveness. I have employed this approach successfully with businesses of varying sizes and in multiple industries, thereby growing the excitement and overall use of data beyond a piece of technology that only gets brought out during pitches or high profile meetings.
