I imagine a USA where race no longer predicts outcomes. My own collusion with white supremacy and anti-Blackness is a lifelong journey I mitigate for my soul’s liberation. I am a Mississippi born redneck, alcoholic, psychotherapist, San Francisco Bay Area queer, higher ed administrator with (unapologetically) a Critical Race Theory informed doctorate. As of April 2024, I add “award-winning author.” An almost-too-late-accident-baby born 40 weeks after the Kennedy inauguration, I first learned democracy watching my parents risk their lives and mine in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Years later, when I met and told Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale that my parents worked in Mississippi voter registration drives, he raised his brow, "They were some brave people." A remarkable "WHO" said "WHAT" moment, surely Gabriel's horn rang out across heaven. One day at a time, for over 37 years, I practice acceptance as the answer to what disturbs me. I am blessed with what is needed (artha) to do this work. I struggle not to boss God about what the results should be. First acceptance, then Aham Brahmasmi. My LLC "Waterbrook" is inspired by the Psalmist’s thirst-longing, "As the deer pants for the Waterbrook, so my soul pants for you Oh God." May this Waterbrook flow into those mighty and righteous falling waters of justice envisioned by MLK quoting Amos for the Beloved Community.
