The scientific consensus is that a third of the ocean must be protected from human pressures, and the bigger the continuous area the better. I am proud to take over the Vice Chair and Treasurer duties of the Chagos Conservation Trust – US (www.cctus.org), a charitable foundation that successfully lobbied for the declaration of Earth’s largest protected area, the Chagos archipelago, that sprawls across 600,000 sq. km of the pristine central Indian Ocean.

Dave spent 20 years in the US Navy, the majority of which was spent in Cryptology supporting special operations in both the INDOPACOM and CENTCOM areas of responsibility.  Dave deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Philippines, and had surface force deployments in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and Western Pacific.

He is an expert in Information Warfare operations against the PRC/CCP, specializing in Military Deception and Cyber Operations.

Dave is an accomplished senior security consultant to government and industry clients providing cyber and national security expertise to risk management, security program, and strategic planning. Tomorrow is #NationalThomasJeffersonDay: The Founding Father whose many accomplishments included the Committee on Spies report that was considered by the Continental Congress and led to the enactment of the first espionage act on Aug. 21, 1776.

This picture, a MUCH younger me, is approximately 7 months before I put into action a plan to end my life.  A newly wed, in a foreign country, in what should have been a rewarding afloat tour, and I had decided that ending my life was the only answer - 22 years ago today.

BOY WAS I WRONG,...  Since then I have experienced more out of life than I could have imagined and accomplished many of the goals I'd set years before.   

Please reach out to someone if you ever feel there is nothing else left in life.

Every time you contract muscles, the muscles release a protein that contributes to our happiness. Scientists call them “Hope Molecules”.  I call it further proof that MOVEMENT is key to our mental fitness and why it comes first in my 4Ms for Mental Fitness!

Realized I've been off trend with posting on my mental fitness journey.  

Admittedly, looking back at my recent posts on the subject, I've been a little discouraged by my inability to run at the levels I was able to before the marathon.  Doc believes my foot issue is more a heel pad problem than related to my Achilles.  With some tweaks the last couple of days I'm seeing some more improvement.

While I did not get into the DOPEY CHALLENGE again this year, I am NOT giving up; I WILL get in next year!

Get out and enjoy the warmer weather for your body AND mind!

Spring is in the air, and so is ALL the pollen. That shouldn’t stop you from moving your body to get out of the winter slump!

Today was a solid (relatively ‘fast’) 4 miles. Since the last marathon I’ve continued to have issues with my Achilles’ and it’s hampered my running. 

While I’ve cancelled my spring races to focus on proper preparation, I’m beginning to build my training regimen, incorporating more weights and other exercises. 

Big debate in my mind is whether to sign up for the Walt Disney World DOPEY CHALLENGE next week for January race days.  Not that I don’t think I’ll be able to do it ever just wondering if I’ll be ready in time - staying healthy and injury free. Will know Tuesday if I get in or not I guess will determine my training plan!

The U.S. counterintelligence head says the list of threats is long and getting longer

As the head of American counterintelligence, Mike Casey sees on a daily basis the scope of foreign spying operations, cyberattacks and economic espionage against the United States. 

"The scale is impressive and terrifying," said Casey. 

"Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for everybody else, counterintelligence, it turns out, is a growth business," he told NPR in an interview. "More players are getting into it with more tools, going after more targets."

"It's not just the Russians stealing secrets from the State Department anymore," Casey said. "It's everybody trying to steal all sorts of intellectual property, going after critical infrastructure. Just the list goes on and on."
For all the changes, one foreign adversary still stands out, he says, for the ambition and scale of its espionage efforts against the U.S.: the People's Republic of China.

INSIDER THREATS - Today in Espionage History

April 10, 1938 - Cambridge Five member Donald Maclean was activated when he met his new handler, Kitty Harris (former spouse of Communist Party of USA leader, Earl Browder), when she gave him the pass phrase, "You hadn't expected to see a lady, had you?" and he responded, "No, but it's a pleasant surprise".

Maclean and the rest of the Cambridge Five provided high level intelligence to the Soviets before, during, and after WWII, though the Soviets were suspicious of what they provided through most of their espionage period.

Maclean would eventually defect to the Soviet Union, leaving England on his 38th birthday, though his whereabouts were not confirmed until almost 5 years later.  He integrated well in Moscow, learning the language, earning a doctorate, and becoming a consultant on economics with the west.

On April 18, 1944, Robert Philip Hanssen was born in Chicago, IL.  Robert Hanssen would go on to be an FBI agent who then spied for both the Soviet and Russian intelligence services from 1979 until his arrest in 2001. The Department of Justice Webster Report would describe his espionage as “the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history”.  Hanssen was eventually arrested February 18, 2001, pleading guilty in a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty, and died in ADX Supermax prison, Colorado on June 5, 2023.
 
Insider threats are often the ones we least likely suspect. Effective programs can help prevent the success or damage inflicted by insider threats.

Former US diplomat sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to spying for Cuba

Manuel Rocha, the former US ambassador to Bolivia who acted as a secret foreign agent of Cuba, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges Friday – a judge telling him, “you turned your back on this country.”

Rocha, 73, pleaded guilty in Miami to one count of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government and defrauding the United States. He also pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government without notice to the US government.

Prosecutors have alleged the former American diplomat acted as a “covert agent of Cuba’s intelligence services” for decades.
