As a Senior Data Scientist I led, trained, and coached a team of Business Analyst, Data Analysts and Interchange and Pricing Analysts to work closely with the Engineering and Product Management team to develop internal, customer-focused data products, implement new Cards Acquiring Connections for Scheme's like MasterCard, Visa, JCB, Diners, Discover, UnionPay and Amex, and provide training to Global Team Members regarding Acquiring Pricing and Technical Product Implementations.

Why Payments Needs More Diversity of Thought

When I started my career in Payments, I was convinced that if I put in the work, I would eventually reap the rewards.

So, with every single payments company I worked for, I took that mentality and always started eager, hard-working, and driven to prove to myself that I belonged.

Having worked for over 20 years, hundreds of 40+ hour weeks, and even working through many holiday periods, I believe I have built a track record that allows me to have an opinion and speak about topics and companies in this industry through my “objective” lens.

However, last week, when I spoke about being “Overqualified,” hundreds of people messaged me privately, sharing their stories of feeling overqualified and overlooked as well.

A few of them asked for my advice on what they should do to further their careers. As many of them felt like they were only just getting started, but despite great resumes, they weren’t able to land the role they believe they are best suited for.

While I gave most of them my honest reaction, I took some time this week to really think about it, and this is what I came up with.

I believe that the Payments industry needs more people with different backgrounds, experiences, ethnicities, and genders to SHARE their ideas, opinions, and insights PUBLICLY.

For too long, we have allowed the Payments industry to thrive under GROUPTHINK.

Something that I believe is the by-product of this industry, having its origins being the side-product of incumbent banks, which has shaped the way payments professionals need to dress, behave, and talk for decades.

It is focused on minimizing conflict and creating environments where individual members suppress their own opinions that might contradict the group's consensus.

Because of this, the majority of people active on platforms like LinkedIn will like their company’s social posts or repost their CEO’s press statement but NEVER share what they really think to avoid disruption or in fear of being called into the HR office.

But the truth is that groupthink actually deteriorates decision-making quality, as there is less conflict and no real critical debate, as potential problems, audiences, and opportunities are overlooked.

Instead, Payments companies should seek out and support those who have Diversity of Thought.

Diversity of Thought actually creates different perspectives, as people with different backgrounds and experiences can see the same problem in unique ways, often leading to a range of solutions that might not have been as apparent to others who don’t share those same perspectives.

Just to be clear, I am not saying companies shouldn't be diverse. What I am saying is that we need Diversity in Thought, which means allowing people to have their opinions and share them publicly. As I believe this will generate better leaders, better products, and more profitable results.
