...XYZ Design

When you get an opportunity to work at your company ‘crush’, you hop to it. 
I started at XYZ with big eyes, wide smiles, and butterflies. I’ll never forget the first scrum meeting, everyone standing around a board with all the projects listed and my name on the board. It was official, I was part of this cool design team and finally I get to design actual products! 

Developing new products, learning systems, manufacturing, prototyping and how to work in a design team was fun and exciting. I enjoyed working in a team and the experience that came with taking a product from idea to production.

The time spent at xyz was invaluable, and the design etiquette sponged from Dave Wiseman helped lay the groundwork for my product development skills today.

Graphic Laminates

Still wiping the dust off my coat from sanding down my final varsity project - I started my first 'official' job after studying Industrial Design. 

Graphic laminates are a factory style, large format printing and 3D displays company who produce work for large brands and companies in South Africa.  

Learning fast and not tripping over my newly degree’d shoes, I was responsible for the design, development and managing of all the 3D displays that came through the factory door.  

Making friends, working long hours to hit deadlines, understanding print, engaging with clients and the in-house team. This job gave me a broad understanding of the real world and how to get things done efficiently and effectively.

All sorts 

These are only short mentions in my bio, but they helped lay the foundation of who I am today. Very often, only when looking back, you realise how valuable some of those ‘odd’ jobs are. 

1. Working as a commercial fisherman catching tuna, snoek and yellowtail taught me to work hard, work dirty and work incredible long hours, sometimes with no pay (no fish, no pay). 

2. Processing yellowfin tuna and selling it with my good mate taught me how to sell and be passionate about a product. It gave me my first glimpse into entrepreneurship. 

3. Grinding out long nights in London as a ‘hired hand’ for a sound and lighting company showed me how the other world lives, how to work on a few hours sleep, and how to carry really heavy things by myself. 

4. Putting up door frames in an empty skeleton which is now called the Cape Town Stadium, showed me how a systematic approach to a big job, helps get things done. It taught me how to interact with teams from different walks of life, and now I know what ironmongery is.
