Day 10: For my first Friday all-hands I was tasked with compiling a collage to share with the team about who I am and what matters to me.

Day 11: A little over a lear ago, I walked into Othership for the first time, excited and desperate for a reset.

Between product announcements, growth goals, and the frenetic energy of startup life, I'd forgotten what it felt like to just... breathe.

That was 81 sessions ago. 

The heat forces me to be present. 

The cold plunges demand surrender. 

And in that combination of hormetic stress and intentional recovery, I found something that has become a sacred part of my routine here in New York: a practice that didn't fix everything, but gave me tools to navigate the chaos.

Here's what surprised me about the parallels to operating an early-stage startup:
*The power of intentional pauses.* In breathwork, the holds between inhales and exhales are where transformation happens. In startup life, the moments I force myself to step back—even for 10 minutes—are often when clarity emerges. The answer to that product question or growth tactic often surfaces when I stop frantically searching for it.

*Discomfort is data, not disaster.* That first cold plunge felt impossible. But learning to breathe through the shock, to recognize that discomfort doesn't mean danger, has completely changed how I handle hard conversations, critical feedback, or the dozen times a day the unexpected punches you in the mouth. Not everything that feels bad is bad.

*Grounding isn't luxury—it's infrastructure.* I used to think meditation, breathwork, and recovery practices were for people who had the privilege of "extra time" Now I see them as foundational. You can't build something sustainable if you're constantly running on cortisol and cold brew.

Success as an early-stage operator isn't about eliminating stress, it's about building the capacity to move through it without losing yourself in the process.

Day 13: When you've been inside a growing scaleup for long enough, it's easy to forget how exhilaration of the early days when you're building the foundation.

Day 12: One of the most underrated skills in marketing is being able to communicate "Why?"

When we work so tirelessly to quantify our impact—tracking conversions, CAC, click-through rates, and endless other metrics—it's easy to miss the forest for the trees when communicating strategies, tactics, and results.

One of the best managers I ever worked under drilled into me the importance of answering the "why" with every deliverable. It's a habit that serves me well today.

It's also one of the biggest traps that nearly every new AI company I've reviewed falls into. 

Reporting what happened isn't terribly hard. What's hard, and what comes only with experience, is elucidating the "why".
• No experience: Conversions are up X%.
• Entry-level marketer: Conversions are up X% because we received more organic search traffic.
• Junior marketer: Conversions are up X% because we received more organic search traffic from branded search terms.

The example above, while contrived, is illustrative, and unfortunately just the tip of the iceberg. 

On its face, the junior marketers' seems perfectly acceptable. It's where most AI is today. But it gives only the illusion of explanation.

Allow me to elaborate.

The real question that we've uncovered from this exercise: why are branded search terms up?

That question is typically far more difficult to answer, but far more impactful.

Now, I'm not writing a post about the value of brand marketing.

Rather, that simple question invariably spawns a host of sticky questions that are very difficult to answer quantitatively, but far more rewarding when we reach a conclusion:
• Is it the result of demand generation tactics? 
• Perhaps the company was featured in the media?
• Were we mentioned by an influencer somewhere? 
• Is it some combination of the above? (It usually is.)

Answering these questions requires holistic analysis - both qualitative and quantitative - along with experienced judgment and conviction.

Day 9: An often overlooked aspect of the growth cycle is the role of lifecycle/marketing automation comms to move prospects through the funnel. 

In the earliest days, it's often possible to walk users through the process manually. However, as you scale, it's critical that users are provided context, instructions, and orientation at their own pace and asynchronously so that their momentum isn't slowed and their equipped to activate.

However, I'm not referring to simple autoresponders (this isn't 2015.)

What most marketers miss is deep enrichment of micro-interaction tracking that facilitate 1:Many workflows that feel bespoke and 1:1. This is easier said than done, but made far easier working with best-in-class tools like PostHog (CDP/Analytics) and Customer.io for robust, granular journey creation. 

This is deep work that requires the appropriate ambiance...
