Optonaut followed the vision of bringing VR to everyone by allowing people all over the world to create, share and view VR images. Optonaut was acquired in 2016 by I AM Cardboard.

During the research internship, I had the chance to work with leading experts on a project about self-adjusting computation. During the project, I mastered the scala language and wrote several scala compiler plug-ins for code analysis and dependency tree visualization.

What made AWS so successful - and why our bet at Optima is similar: 

Instead of servers, AWS provides storage and compute. Hardware became accessible and software-defined - suddenly everything was easy, quick, testable, replicable. You didn’t think about racks, cooling, servers, disks anymore: You think about your app and your business case. Running a world-class SaaS with two devs and no infra team? Not a problem anymore.

That exact shift is what we’re building at Optima, but for energy.

Across Austria, Switzerland, and beyond, PV systems, heat pumps, batteries, and EV chargers are being installed at record pace. But right now, they remain uncoordinated islands. Each device runs in its own software, disconnected from the household, the energy community, or the grid.

The result? Higher costs for households. Inconvenience for homeowners. Untapped flexibility for communities. More stress on the grid, not less.
With Optima, we want our partners and clients to stop thinking about device quirks - and instead focus on what really matters:

And that’s it. Providing a versatile hardware gateway at agressive cost is the first step. Building a well-designed software layer for energy the second, and we’ve been on it all year already. First pilots on the new stack were deployed this week. Load management, asset control, and flexibility pooling - made easy and accessible. Energy, software defined. Let's go. 💚
