As a child I was terribly afraid of heights.
 
One time I accompanied my dad to a house where renovations were being done. To view the construction on the top floor, you had to climb a ladder.
 
Yep, there were no stairs to go up. Just a ladder resting against an open square to the floor above.
 
I stood at the bottom, eyeing the ladder warily. Quite disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to see what had been done, and the beautiful view.
 
A minute later, when my dad realized that I hadn’t followed them up, he called down to me to come up.
 
I said quite clearly that I couldn’t.
 
But he insisted. He kept on repeating it. Telling me how nice the view was from up there.
 
As he spoke I placed a hand on the ladder and climbed a couple of steps.
 
He kept on encouraging me.
 
Half way up, I was so nervous, that the ladder was shaking.
 
When I was most of the way up, he stretched out his hand and helped me up.
 
The view was magnificent.
 
After that I was able to climb up standard ladders without any problems.
 
(though it did take time to recover that day)
 
I felt on top of the world for having done what everyone else seemed to do easily.
 
 
And that’s the same with everything in life, in business. When you take a step out of your comfort zone, with a supportive network around you, you suddenly have new and greater challenges you aim for.
